Much delayed Home makes lacklustre PS3 debut, officials admit it won't drive console
A lackluster debut by Sony’s virtual world Home has led PS3 officials to downplay the significance of the new service. Home is a free download for PS3 owners and in the past has been touted as a killer app for the platform; potentially a console version of Second Life, with avatars which allow PS3 owners to interact with each other.
But early reaction has been muted. read more »

Re: Much delayed Home makes lacklustre PS3 debut, officials admit it won't drive cons
Hasnt most things about the PS3 been a let down?
The delays, the poor games quality compared to the 360 versions?
The cost of the machine has hardly fallen since launch -now costing nearly three times as much as a basic (get you playing games) 360 system.
The fact that sony back peddled and removed PS1&PS2 backward compatibilty.
The fact that although they have an installed base of loads of 'bluray players' but this hasnt really impacted on blu ray sales (thats now coming due to cheaper stand alones)
...And now the much delayed home not being as promised (from sony thats NO shock)

Re: Much delayed Home makes lacklustre PS3 debut, officials admit it won't drive cons
Agree with you except the part of poor game quality agains X360.
I have both consoles and till now i could't find a game with less quality in ps3, their both really close in terms of graphics and playability. though if your intention is to have a media centre that fits well in your living room and a big format support you wont go wrong with ps3....but still you have to open the wallet a tinny bit more.
dont forget it took microsoft almost 3 years to fix the red rings of dead and they were 2 years ahead of sony in 3rd gen console gaming, sony still catching up...

I just feel Sony think we are all sheep and will buy any old rubbish. In part that maybee correct as there are fanboys who will ONLY buy a Playstation and luckily it hasnt paid of and Sony are in trouble because of this.
For the average teenager who wants a games machine are you going to spend your pocket money on a £300 PS3 because of the bluray player even though they only have a 14" portable or get a bargain 360 at the price of between £99-£127???
Its not rocket science to see why Sony are loosing out...

I'd get over whatever chip on your shoulder that you have about Sony and then you two can enjoy what is a fantastic games console . Why do you feel that Sony are losing out? The PS3 is selling faster than the 360, even though it is more expensive (it's sales rate is around 0.7 million per annum faster).
The only company that has made a real impact this gen is Nintendo, who's console (with last gen tech inside as the anti Nintendo people love to shout about ) sells for more than the arcade 360 and has shifted nearly twice as many units in only 2/3rds of the time!
People can generally afford consoles between 0-£300 and whilst it's always a factor people generally don't buy on price. Many people percieve that if something is too cheap then it's not as good, so you can set a price too low! These purchases are generally heavily emotional purchases and as long as cost isn't prohibative, it's low down the list for a lot of people.

For what's it's worth though the Wii is its own unique gaming experience and is less comparable to the 360 and PS3 than the 360 is to the PS3, plus it's Nintendo and they just seem to get things right in a cute Nintendo way.

I doubt that you have even played on HOME so if you havn't then you don't know what your talking about.
I have played on home a few times and like it so far, it will get better when more places open up. Playing games online seems to have got better on the PSN since HOME started and now its almost as good as going online on my 360.

Re: Much delayed Home makes lacklustre PS3 debut, officials admit it won't drive cons
I love my PS3 it's great at playing Blu-Rays and it came with a free games console..(ducks for cover)...
I'm just joking... It's a crackin bit of kit.. And yes HOME "is" a let down but it will get better...
And 360 fanboys are quick to forget the constant issues with "down" days with Live.. It is constantly being updated and adjusted and that "service" costs money. HOME is free...

Re: Much delayed Home makes lacklustre PS3 debut, officials admit it won't drive cons
I didn't even buy my PS3 to play games. I wanted a HD media streamer and was planning to buy a Popcorn hour, I then noticed i could pick up a 40Gb PS3 for only £40 more. With the PS3 having Blu-Ray as well the decision was a no brainer. The 360 didn't even come into the equation just to it's limited Media capabilities.
Haven't looked back since and despite not planning to play games on it i now have about 15 PS3 games. All my gaming used to be on the PC (I was mod of the PC section here) but i have in fact since sold my gaming rig on and now only play games on the PS3. My PC would have destroyed both the PS3 and 360 Graphically but i still enjoy gaming more on the PS3. Graphics aren't everything

Exactly, and contained in your reply is why Nintendo are running away with the console industry (handheld and TV) at the moment. They are unique and take risks, where as whilst the other two are great platforms, they thought traditional and have kind of bolted on the casual side of things. You can imagine that at both the Playstation and Xbox board meetings there was an item on the agenda called 'casual gamers'. Nintendo on the other hand just base their philosophy around making interactive experiences which are all inclusive. They don't have a console with some 'casual games' on it, they simply have a console that anyone can pick up and play and have fun with.

The 360 has sold 25 million in 3 years and the PS3 18 million in 2 years. The maths need not be any more complex than that really. Sony just have to sell another 7 million in 2009 to match that rate.
To match the sales rate of the 360 with the price of the PS3 would have been impressive, but to beat it is fantastic. The 360 is now very cheap and Sony still have the scope to reduce the cost of the PS3 should they wish to capture more market share. I guess they will be looking to see the effect of the big winter/new year releases on sales before looking down that route though.

Why do people have to be Fanboys!?
Im not going to say I was not a little disappointed by 'Home' but considering it is all online and the graphics I can't see why people complain. I mean come on and look at the potential that 'Home' has when it is worked out. I did once have a Xbox 360 which I only ended giving up because it burned out 5 times in one year...this is what has made me come to the PS3. I do not think PS3's games are poor either, they just do not have as much as a selection as the 360 but do remember that Microsoft has had more time with the 360 then Sony did with the PS3.
It just comes down to what you want in an console. The PS3 has many features over the 360 and vice versa but all these Fanboys and what not....its just pathetic! And everyone saids its all about the 360 and then others say its all about the PS3 but no one really takes into account that at the moment its all about the 'Nintendo Wii'....and thats not even HD yet.
