Post Studios turn to Sci-Fi and fantasy TV favourites to boost Blu-ray

Can the world’s best loved Sci-fi and fantasy TV shows breathe fresh life into Blu-ray disc sales? Some studios think so and are fast tracking them to the hi-def disc format.

TV on DVD has become a massive success and now US networks are hoping they can catch lightning in a bottle twice, by building on the fan base of cult shows.  read more »

Theres a much simpler way to boost sales: REDUCE THE PRICES OF THE DISCS!

Do they ever listen to the buying public?

Re: Studios turn to Sci-Fi and fantasy TV favourites to boost Blu-ray

I'm currently not tempted to update at present. The discs are too expensive by far. When DVD's first came out there was a significant price premium to pay over videos and it wasn't until videos were being discontinued that the prices seemed to become more realistic

TV boxsets are pretty good value on Blu-ray in terms of minutes per pound which is why my HD buying has been almost all TV and not Movies, when a boxset can be had for the same price as a movie (with some extras) there is something wrong in the pricing.

Re: Studios turn to Sci-Fi and fantasy TV favourites to boost Blu-ray

I think the prices of Blu-rays are slowly improving. Just take a look through the upcoming releases on Play.com. You've got the likes of 'The Incredible Hulk' for £15.99 and most new releases are under £17-18. Also, some catalogue titles like 'The Goonies' are being released for £11.99 as well which isn't bad - unless you compare it to the DVD's price of course.

What were you comparing it to then? Diamonds??

Don't know about anybody else, but I think we are possibly starting to see the PS3 demographic skewed movie selection we all feared BR may follow after HD-DVD's demise and it's inability to go mainstream??

Pushing Daisies is £40 in the shops. A bit much for nine 40 minute episodes.

Re: Studios turn to Sci-Fi and fantasy TV favourites to boost Blu-ray

Had a quick look on the Internet and play is selling DVD Pushing Daisies for £14.99, Blu Ray for £31.99. That's quite a price difference.

I can remember early DVD when VHS was still around. For the extra money you'd get much better picture, sound and some special features (unless it was early Region 2 when we seemed to get very little in the way of special features). I think the jump in improvement from DVD to Blu Ray isn't as obvious as the jump from VHS to DVD, so it does make such a big price difference hard to justify.

Re: Studios turn to Sci-Fi and fantasy TV favourites to boost Blu-ray

There's plenty of room on a BD disc for loads more extras than the DVD. They shoiuld be using this to help push Blu-Ray rather than just mirroring, or more often less, extras on the DVD versions.

Re: Studios turn to Sci-Fi and fantasy TV favourites to boost Blu-ray

I expect they researched the key demographic of the average BD viewer, which - let's face it - is a PS3 owner. Hence the sci-fi. Hence the fantasy.

Yes I thought £32 was too much as well. I've ordered it from the States at £20 which is a reasonable price.

Best wishes

Re: Studios turn to Sci-Fi and fantasy TV favourites to boost Blu-ray

Most of us really do not want these 'extras'. A film is a film. I don't want alternative endings, games etc. How much does all this cr*p add to the cost of the disc? Background information on the production of the film, interviews with the stars could easily be obtained via the internet. They are not something you want to keep and treasure forever.
