Post Blu-ray player price crash expected in November

Blu-ray player prices are heading for a dramatic fall. That’s the prediction of industry observers in the US who are already speculating over the depth of BD discounting expected in November. It’s then that the main American retailers will reveal their Black Friday sales prices.

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving, which traditionally kick starts the US holiday sales season. This year it falls on November 28.  read more »

Re: Blu-ray player price crash expected in November

good news and hopefully the discs will follow suit

lets say a player can be had for £100-150, then the discs will look VERY expensive compared to the hardware. then they've got to fall in price!

Re: Blu-ray player price crash expected in November

Unless this price crash happens soon and players fall to under £100 and discs fall to around £10 the medium is destined to become a niche product.

What with all the uncertainty regarding the world economy most people will not be tempted into parting with serious money for something that on most tv's (under 42")cannot be seen to be much better than standard dvd.

We enthusiasts who have much larger screens and pj's can see the difference but I have so far bought only 3 blu discs and rent the rest.

I have built up a collection of 60+ hdvd the vast majority at under £3.00 in fact 16 of them cost me 99p each and am finding it difficult to stump up the £15.00+ for new release movies.

I just spent £21 getting Iron Man on bluray and my next purchase will be Batman TDK and that is probably it for this year.

Re: Blu-ray player price crash expected in November

I have to agree with the above - I only know a few people who have either HD or Blu-Ray, and nobody is prepared to pay the high prices. The Blu-Ray discs need to come down to compete with DVD, rather than sitting so far above it. There just wont be hordes of people moving to the format until then.

Fingers crossed that this will result in cheaper discs for all...

Re: Blu-ray player price crash expected in November

Agree with what's been said, the discs definitely have to come down to get the format moving in the right direction.

Re: Blu-ray player price crash expected in November

You just have to look at Zavvi prices: £29 for Cars movie on Blu-ray compared to some PS3 games going for £15. Both are Blu-ray discs so why double the expense for a movie when traditionally DVD games retail for well over the price of movies.
