Post Toshiba says Super Resolution LCD TVs will win over high-end AV fans, predicts sales

Toshiba says that it expects that its new picture processing circuitry, dubbed Super Resolution Technology, or SRT, will win over discerning TV buyers and enable it to double sales of LCD TVs worldwide.
Speaking in Japan, the company announced that it aims to sell 13 million screens in 2010, which is double what it sold in 2007.  read more »

More scalers - seems like the market is in complete disarray - HD DVD/Blu Ray/Digital Cinema/SRT/OLED/SED/Ultra HD - where's the madness going to end. When one format seems to claim victory another one is out hot on the heals

Seems like Joe Public will be happy to stick with what he has if there's a tv that will sharpen the image enough so that it looks like HD - I suppose if you're not into the new HD sound formats then this may be the ultimate winner

Well, I see a time when there will be no moving parts. Even now they are talking about replacing CDs with micro SD cards with a usb adapter. In fact this year in the USA and later Europe they are going to start selling them.

You can buy 256GB memory disk drives now and that's 25% of a modern hard disk, they are currently expensive but it's only time before they come down to the same price as a hard disk.

Super-hi-def - We don't even have proper hi-def in the UK. USA has over 120 HD channels + counting and most are free except for premium channels. They don't charge an extra £10 a month for a handful of hd channels like $$$$ky. Freesat is a joke the same as Virgin cable.

Toshibas Titanic approach is comical.

I'm not sure, Tommy.

Even for people with Blu-ray Disc and Sky HD, most of the time we're watching upscaled SD on our HD displays, and that's likely to remain the case for some considerable time. The quality of scaling in our displays is subsequently very important - particularly as Sky's HD box and the current crop of BD players are almost universally average in the upscaling department.

The great irony is that Tosh's TVs will be using the Cell Processor chip developed for, you guessed it, Sony's HD DVD-defeating PS3.

The news story isn't entirely clear - by 'super resolution', is it referring to LCD screens beyond 1080p, or is it just a fancy name for another proprietary scaling technology?

Joe.

Just upscaling, though it should be noted a better quality upscaling than on the recent DVD upscaler.
