Post Ofcom ploughs ahead with miserly Freeview HD plan

Ofcom has controversially announced that it will accelerate its own plan to bring high definition to the Freeview terrestrial TV platform, with services due to start in 2009. Despite howls of protest from CE manufacturers, the watchdog has decided to shuffle spectrum in such a way as to only allow four channels of 720p high-definition. [...]

4 channels at 720p - what a joke. Get rid of the quiz channels.

I hope the CE manufacturers don't make the boxes.

Freesat seems to be the best option.

Re: Ofcom ploughs ahead with miserly Freeview HD plan

After all the hoo-hah, and all the consumers being told "its only worth getting a Full1080p screen", Freeview aren't even gonna broadcast in 1080!

The whole transfer from SD to HD has been a joke IMHO, from dodgy gen 1 BluRay's to 1080 37" screens!

Roll on the days of cheap HD projectors and and easy to access digital HD film files..

Re: Ofcom ploughs ahead with miserly Freeview HD plan

Unless or until someone comes up with an ingenious method of cramming a lot more data into the bandwidth available for terrestrial freeview you will never get a comprehensive range of hd channels on this format.

It does look like we will get a viable alternative to sky hd over a free to air satellite service which is probably the best we can hope for
