Digital Projection Screen
Texas Instruments offered visitors to CES a large stand showing off DLP technology available in a wide range of products from various manufacturers. The first thing you see as you enter their booth was a 7 meter screen powered by two Digital Projection lightening 40 1080p DLP projectors offering a massive 60,000 lumens. Used as large venue machines the picture quality on offer even in a brightly lit show floor was very good indeed.
DLP stand
The main push of this years show for DLP was gaming in the form of a dual view DLP HDTV. Using special glasses during a two player game, you only see your part of the split screen as a full image across the panel. The glasses work at a frequency that allows two players to have separate images on the same TV, very neat.

Obviously the other part of this technology is 3D movie watching using the same electronic glasses and an equipped DLP HDTV you can watch high quality 3D images and not feel cheated like the days of 3D cinema. Interesting technology.
3D HDTV in action
Or how about playing your video games on a screen that takes up your entire field of vision? That was one concept offered by using DLP technology and it raised questions of possible 2.35:1 monitors for movie watching being available in the future.
Widescreen Gaming!
Best gimmick for me was the R2D2 DLP projector and DVD player which has been seen before, but is now available on the market at a not unreasonable $1200.
R2D2 DLP
Obviously the picture quality from the R2 unit is not fantastic, probably more in line with a cheap DLP stand alone projector, but it is a product that would be great for the kids bedroom allowing them to watch their own movies on a snazzy 18" R2 D2.
