Post We can win HD disc war, says Stringer, because?

Some two weeks after commenting that the HD disc format war is at “stalemate” Sony CEO Howard Stringer now says that Blu-ray can still defeat HD DVD. “It isn’t the cheaper format,” he admits, “but it is the better format.”Talking to trade magazine The Hollywood Reporter, Stringer added: “Our partners are with Blu-ray disc because, [...]

I still believe its the format which brings out the cheapest RECORDABLE machine that will win out. Most people just don't want a player they want a recorder at dvd recorder prices.

Re: We can win HD disc war, says Stringer, because?

It's strange...I may be wrong, but it seems that it is only Blu-Ray who feel they have to have all these press releases and always saying the same thing.

To be honest, it isn't the best format....they still haven't sorted their interactivity out and when it finally does arrive, the current range of players cannot play them! Every HD-DVD player has had the interactivity since inception and it works really well. Picture wise...there is negligible difference. The difference in quality sometimes is down to the studio that produces it, not the media it's put on.

Before the Fanboi's start harping on at me like before that I am pro HD-DVD, I own both formats and the above is fact, not rumour.

I can only guess why HD-DVD hardly ever have press releases...it could be they are comfortable with the way things are now...

But I only wish that the companies behind Bluray would stop sending out what seems like a different person every day sayin "I think Blu-ray will win this HD war. Why? Because we are better, because this, because that" It's getting BORING now!! We get the point!!

I bought a combined HDD/DVD recorder about two years ago. The HDD is in constant use. The DVD recorder side has NEVER been used. Recording to HDD is so easy. With DVD-R I really can't be bothered hunting for a disk.

Re: We can win HD disc war, says Stringer, because?

this xmas should give an indication which format will be in the strongest postion.
I think the studios will pay close attendtion to the sales of HD-DVD/Blu-Ray hardware and films sales.

I'm with you Drew it will be xmas sales, but next year 2008. At the moment the hardware and films are too expensive for the mass market.

cheers Steve

yeah ur most likely correct there but i still think the studios will pay close attention this xmas. Will we see any studios making any cross overs after the xmas period?

I'm with Sonic on this issue. Recording from tv is so much easier and convenient with a HDD. I suppose some may prefer a disc recorder for archiving but I cannot be bothered cluttering living space with unwatched discs. Anything I feel that's worth keeping I'll buy on DVD or one of the new Hi def formats.

Re: We can win HD disc war, says Stringer, because?

DVD recording is or was a passing fad, with HDD giving it a helping hand...
So this begs the question why do some people think B-ray will win because of this irrelevant better recording facility b/s.

Anyway, anyone with a ounce of common sense would see through all the so-called propaganda and b/s statistics the Blu-Ray affiliated companies produce.

Just my two pennies worth..

I think the adult content on vhs won it,sony would not let it go on betamax

ps.i sent a betamax away for repair last week, only a few things wrong with it but the service centre can not get the parts,no surprise there.

some people really live in the past!

One of the guys I used to work with bought a freeview PVR to record programs for his kids. Trouble is the kids don't just want to watch the programs once - they want to watch them time and time again - so he never wipes them off. He ended up buying another PVR when the first got full - and then another PVR when that got full. I haven't seen him for a few months - I hate to think how many he has now. [LOL]
