The whole energy consumption of a television in standby mode is one of the largest misconceptions doing the rounds at the moment. Most modern televisions use less than 1W of power in standby mode, which equates to less than £1 per year in running costs. In my experience products that completely remove power tend to experience a larger occurrence of component failure than products that remain partially on; this is often due to a larger degree of expansion and contraction of the physical components. If a television fails prematurely, the impact to the environment is significantly larger than that of the energy consumption the device would have used otherwise. People need to factor in that the old television needs to be disposed of and new one manufactured and delivered to replace it; each of which has a larger impact on the environment than the standby mode.
