Post PS3 cannot win console race say experts

Market research firm Nollenberger Capital Partners estimates that Sony will sell 500,000 to 700,000 European PlayStation 3s at launch, down significantly from Sony’s original forecast of one million consoles. Further gloomy news for the PS3 camp comes from US research outfit J.P. Morgan. It predicts that Sony is destined to come second in the next [...]

I am not sure that a prediction that a company will sell 65 million units of a product could ever be classed as 'gloomy' news

Depends how much of an axe to grind you've got.

That is like saying Mercedes or Porsche performed worse than Ford because it sold fewer cars...

I think 65million units is an admirable figure especially when you look at the price.

These estimates are always next to useless in my view.

Reading a lot of gaming threads, people are already starting to get tired of the Wii as its seen as a one trick pony and therefore its s shelf life is seriously limited - unlike the ps3 or 360 which will take longer to develop for but with greater reward for users.

Yes but Sony needed to make the price as high as Porsche when it's really a Ford! If you get my drift.

They may well sell 65m units, but Sony had to to pull themselves out of the mire.

Re: PS3 cannot win console race say experts

Surely the only important thing about the PS3 is how much revenue it will generate for Sony over its lifetime.

The PS2 was limited to game disk sales but the PS3 will also generate income for sony through blu ray licence fees and the PSNetwork which has the potential to make the PS3 far more profitable in the long term than the PS2 was even with a smaller installed user base.

Re: PS3 cannot win console race say experts

I was among the first people to buy a PS3 and I can honestly say I had no problem with the cost of it. When you look at what it can do it's actually pretty good value! Blu-Ray players alone are selling for up to £1,000 so an advanced games console, Blu-Ray player, wireless net connection, etc for under £500 is pretty good in my opinion.

Once people realise the potential of the PS3 I have no doubt it will sell the 65 million that was estimated. It's already outsold the 360 and the Wii on the first day according to the news reports I read so the demand is obviously there.

Blu-Ray is also more likely to succeed over HDDVD due to the backing of Sony and other big name movie studios. Just take a look on Play.com for the amount of Blu-Ray discs compared with the amount of HDDVD's.
