Post Sony to turn PS3 into state of the art audiophile player

Sony will release a firmware upgrade for the PlayStation 3 on December 7 which will begin to transform the games console into a state of the art audio player. The firmware will add 88KHz and 176KHz sampling for CD in addition to 44.1KHz.The update is just the start of a program of refinements which take [...]

Re: Sony to turn PS3 into state of the art audiophile player

When will people realise that numbers do not neccessarily relate to audio or video performance. On the audio side, 176 khz sampling counts for nothing if the units power supply is of low guality, or the output devices are cheap ic's and not discrete op-amps. I feel the traditional hi-fi stalwarts Arcam, Naim etc have little to fear. Still, some people will fall for it - 1080p LCD anyone?

Agreed RugbyAl, I can upscale in software on my PC and it's of no use.

FLAC files, RME HDSP 9632 feeding Naim amp and JMlab speakers.

Sony are desperate to promote there PS3 as the best thing since slice bread. I wonder if panic is setting in at PS3 HQ

Thumbs up Re: Sony to turn PS3 into state of the art audiophile player

As I am one of the few who have invested in SACD's and DVD-a, it will at least make my decision easy as to which way I will eventually jump re Blu Ray and HD, once of course the high def players play all source material. Maybe I should not hold my breath!

Re: Sony to turn PS3 into state of the art audiophile player

I don't remember seeing anywhere that the PS3 had 7.1 outputs. So how many are going to be able to access the Hi-def audio stream? Oh yes we'd have to buy a HDMI 1.3 equipped amp.

Think I'll leave it for a year.

Re: Sony to turn PS3 into state of the art audiophile player

PS3 is like a 21 in 1 screwdriver. Ya, it is capeable of doing everything but it does nothing well. I does not even play games well. They disgrace the word audiophile, fools.
