well I think this shows Samsungs 'lack' of commitment to REAL High Definiton.... Quite frankly I am flabbergasted by this press release.... Why on earth are they still concentrating on upscaling DVD players as opposed to real HD????

But what would you play on a 'proper' Hi-Def player at the moment and who's to say they are not working on 'proper' HiDef at the same time? 
Given the number of DVD's in peoples collections I think it is great that Samsung are trying to help squeeze every last bit of detail out of these discs.... and at very competative prices.
It will be a while before I and many other enthusiasts are on the HD player bandwagon, let alone Jo Public...
Hoping to see some good stuff at the Bristol show this year

Samsung's comitment is more than most. They have stated that they are only interested in making a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD combi player, rather than one or the other. Somehow, I can't see Sony or Toshiba haviong that kind of comitment to "true" HD. Anyway, there are no titles available, so Samsung are doing what they should with the market they have.

I'm afraid Samsung aren't allowed to make a Blu-ray/HD DVD combi player due to licensing issues. They have already announced an upcoming Blu-ray player - which unfortunately doesn't output 1080p. D'oh!

Tosh already have the first true high def on sale for under £400 at amazon.com.
Anyway I agree a unified approach is to be admired and I take back what i said about Samsung if that's thier approach :O)

Just out of interest does anyone know how HD-DVD or Upscaling DVD players handle JPEG's???
If I had a 1280x720 JPEG Photo could it be displayed natively using one of these players (natively ish given overscan) and DVI/HDMI output?

Lets say i grabbed some HD content burned onto a dvdr and then played on one of these upscaling dvd players would this run as a proper hd source or what would happen?

What most people overlook is that the Samsung DVD-HD1080 looks like being the first disc player with an HDMI V1.2 output.
EVERYTHING else on the market is still at V1.0 (carries DD/DTS audio) or rarely V1.1 (carries DVD-A).
HDMI V1.2 wil carry direct stream digital (DSD) so SACDs can be replayed without having to be converted down to PCM. This is a long-anticipated capability so far only available with iLink.
Only thing is, I can't think of any amplifiers / processors with V1.2 inputs.....

Samsung upscalers
I am looking for a new dvd player or even better DVD recorder but I am uncertain what upscaling can offer me.I have a loewe spheros which automatically adapts the picture to 1366 x788 resolution.. Is this doing the same job as the samsung upscaler or will I get a noticably improved picture with 720p upscaling? Currently my component input shows an input of 576 pixels at 50 hz.
Advice please

The Denon 3806 has HDMI v. 1.1 and the new Denon 2807 coming out in March is supposed to have "much improved" HDMI capabilities. I wasn't able to find anywhere the HDMI version of the 2807 but I'm hoping it's 1.2.
