The Pioneer player at $1800 is way more expensive than the estimated new HD-DVD players starting at $499.
With such a hugh difference in price, surely HD-DVD is going to get a march on blueray in the short term. Unless price differentials can be addressed HD-DVD may well have the upper hand until Playstation 3 is launched, whenever that is.

two questions for forum members
1. Does anyone know which format companies like Arcam and Meridian are supporting?
2. Is anyone going to seriously consider spending over a grand on a next-gen DVD player until the format war can be resolved?
Just curious.

Samsung has already announced it will build a HD-DVD/Blue-ray player and aim to have it released for the end of 2006. Whether this is Samsung being bullish we'll have to wait and see. However if a dual format machine is released then everyone else will follow in due course.

| Samsung have retracted that claim - there BluRay/HD DVD licences prohibit them from building combi players. The two camps want a definitive winner....

Prices are bound to start off high, the early adopters will pay the price. I would expect the Blu-ray decks to drop in price once HD-DVD hits the shelves, and then, let battle commence |

| HD DVD is hitting the shelves first though - at almost a quarter of the price. With more titles already announced for HD DVD is anyone really up for paying $1800 for this device when it doesn't even support BD-J?
