Post Sony US picks fight with Samsung UK over the future of Blu-ray, but who's right?

Executives from Sony and Samsung have started taking pot shots at each other across the Atlantic, in a growing row over the future of Blu-ray.

The sniping is likely to prove an embarrassment to an industry eager to make the hi-def format into a mainstream home entertainment staple.  read more »

do they think we are stupid, does anyone belive that we wont see a ps4?, as far as i know bluray is pushing it at 1080p so it would make perfect buisiness sense to up the anti in 5 or 10 or years time, otherwise where does your growth market come from.so to get the newest, latest and the best yet you have to upgrade like everthing else! sounds like a bit of forward marketing to me

Re: Sony US picks fight with Samsung UK over the future of Blu-ray, but who's right?

Its a tough one this. Sure BD looks good now, but screen technology is rapidly advancing, soon enough 4x that resolution will be easy and mainstream viable. Current processing power is easily able to decode much higher resolutions, however its all about demand. I dont think most people will care enough about >1080P for a LONG time.

The disc itself is something else though. It may not have the legs Sony would like, once the internet becomes capable of delivering content at that quality in a reasonable time i think BDs days will be numbered. I also think BDs saviour, the PS3, will need replacing long before Sony planned. Its not as powerful as Sony would claim (less than 1TFLOP not the 2+ they claim) and we all know how fickle gamers are. The first hint of a better machine from anyone and they will be off.
