Lightbulb What Home Cinema Magazine confusion!!!!!!

A few months ago I started buying 'What Home Cinema' Magazine by Future Publishing. True, its a little basic, but it had nice readable reviews of latest HDTV's and projectors.

Now as of October it stopped appearing in my local newsagents. And i didn't know if this was because it had been stopped or the owner thought it wasn't worth getting it in anymore.

However I did see another magazine called 'What Plasma and LCD TV', which I bought. It had a similar red and white logo to 'What Home Cinema' Magazine and it was also published by Future.

But although it was similar in many ways to 'What Home Cinema' it was different.

Does anyone know whats happened to 'What Home Cinema Magazine?' As far as I can tell its either

1) It still exists but my newsagent just pulled it from his stands

2) Its been amalgamated into What Plasma & LCD TV or Home Cinema Choice

3) Its been cancelled

anyone know for sure? Home Cinema Choice seems to be the best magazine for enthusiasts, but what annoys me about it is that it assumes we're all 35 yr old bachelors who live in the city and don't mind spending 5 grand on a surround sound system!

Re: What Home Cinema Magazine confusion!!!!!!

Hi, I'm the Deputy Editor of Home Cinema Choice and, until recently, What Home Cinema was one of our sister magazines. Unfortunately, due to a variety of circumstances, What Home Cinema has now ceased publication.

Certain elements of the magazine have been taken up by What Video & High-Def TV, some by What Plasma & LCD TV and a few of the remaining reviews were published by ourselves.

At present, there are no plans to publish another edition of What Home Cinema.

As for our own magazine, we've tried to balance recent editions of HCC (since the relaunch a few months ago) to include affordable kit news and reviews alongside high end systems. For example, in the latest issue there is a 720p projector grouptest which includes an Optoma that's only £500. What we always aim for on the magazine is to put performance over price. If a product is dripping with the latest tech and is under £100, we'd still give it as much gravitas as a £10,000 power amp (for instance).

I hope that helps.

I didn't buy What Home Cinema as I thought it was linked with the other What Hi Fi magazine which I feel is biased towards reviews of big name products (why I gave up on the music magazines too!). I enjoy Home Cinema Choice and am glad What Home Cinema has folded if it means HCC results in more of a budget for content. I enjoy HCC and it has helped me with recent acquisitions and with my first install job - recently half way through!

I am even contemplating on subscribing next month.

Great mag. Keep it up. Keep the technobable to a limit and make sure the novices understand whilst not intimidating the experienced users. That sums up HIFI Choice perfectly.

I think a codec guide could be a useful feature in the back pages. To explain what all the different and latest codecs do. Especially with hd lossless and the sheer volume of decoding codecs on offer.

Re: What Home Cinema Magazine confusion!!!!!!

Thanks Rik, thats all I wanted to know.

I wasn't criticising HOME CINEMA CHOICE. It's easily the best magazine in its class, its just that when ₤4,000 projectors were being called a 'budget' option I had to gawp!

But seeing as you're focused on more entry level products now i'll definitely start picking up HCC

Thanks for letting me know!

Re: What Home Cinema Magazine confusion!!!!!!

I must have bundle of home cinema choice as well as your own home cinema? Widescreen review sound & vision home entertainment and the list goes on, all stacked in my kitchen cupboards for reference use.

I stopped buying these types of magazines around 3 or 4 years ago because of they we’re taking up so much square footage.

If I can get a computer scanner, I can scan each and everyone and then take them to the Bournemouth reference library, so they can place on the entertainment stand for public reading.

I now get most of the current now and then, answers from the internet or from a few sites that have indispensable reference reading.

Yes, the reason I didn't originally subscribe to HCC was your definition of "budget" , but I've heard many people have complaining of alleged biased reviewing by What Hifi mag so I think I'll subscribe to both and cancel one later!
