Re: New look Home Cinema Choice now on sale - with free THX demo disc

Bought the Mag yesterday here in Northern Ireland. Thanks for the info about this disc last week. One tip, and without wanting to start another "Is Dolby better or worse than DTS?" thread, when you get to the menu go the set-up part to select DTS. I think this is included in the 4th heading on the menu. It's not clearly signposted though, mind you I was watching this late last night so it might have been me being thick!
I sat throught the demo and film clips thinking that the Dolby wasn't exactly brilliant. Then I found the DTS link, and replayed everything. I'm glad I did.
Film clips include a fighter sequence from Star Wars III, 3 x Indiana Jones (the Bi-plane/German fighter clip was better in DTS!), 10 seconds worth of Die Hard, a snippet of Alien and in the first subheading in the main menu (Demo loop?) a decent enough clip from The Incredibles.
For those that aren't sold on the idea of listening to music in 5.1, there are a few full length portions of music to test, ranging from Tchaikovsy's Italian wotsit to an American 4 piece sounding as if they are Santana....quite good as well. Now if only DVD-A had taken off!
Finally, I haven't yet tried the THX configeration set-up part of the DVD so I can't confirm whether or not it is the same program found on certain dvds like Monsters Inc for instance.

Re: New look Home Cinema Choice now on sale - with free THX demo disc

Just checked the menu....and I was being thick! However, there are some Easter Eggs to be found.
If you get your player to go to Track 21, up will come a sub menu. Here you'll find 6 winners from a previous THX competition who had to make a version of the intro. THX have then added the appropriate 5.1 soundtrack. The English made Audience is very good especially as it no doubt has been emulated in various homes before ( I know it has here!).
They are all worth a look and it makes you wonder what can be done with a simple camcorder and loads of free time!

Hi Steve, I bought mine on wednesday here in Northern Ireland. It should have got to Yorkshire if it can get to the province! I bought mine in Eason's which is the equivelent of WH Smith. I'd try there again.

Can't find this Issue anywhere in Bath. Been to WH Smith, Local Newsagents, Sainsbury's, Tesco's. No-one seem to have it in and I've been checking almost everyday.

Has it been delayed at all?

I can't find it in anywhere also. I've tried everywhere i can think of in the last two weeks around the Shrewsbury (Shropshire) area but no joy. Is there anyone on the boards from HCC who can tell is if there has been a delay in printing/shipping or something?

Re: New look Home Cinema Choice now on sale - with free THX demo disc

Picked mine up from WHS on Fleet Street (Thameslink Station) and they had quite a few copies there.

The HD supplement is a bit of a joke - it is so blu ray biased that it comfirms my resolve to stop buying these stupid magazines. Only bought this one for the THX disc.

I managed to find mine in WHS Torquay, mainly for the disc. As far as I'm aware, the supplement is purely a Panasonic freebie, and last I looked Panny hadn't got any HD DVD players. I've always thought Home Cinema Choice was HD DVD heavy so it kind of balances out.

I liked the new look mag myself.

Didn't notice it was a Panny freebie. That explains it all! For petes sake they criticised the Xbox 360 Elite for only having 160gb but didn't then repeat this when reviewing the PS3 with only 60gb!

Have not dealved into the mag itself yet - hope thats better.

Great Mag, enjoyed the THX disc. Let's hope they can get more discs like this in the future. (Hopefully the next issue?)

I believe the next issue is out this week?

Cheers

Re: New look Home Cinema Choice now on sale - with free THX demo disc

Just wanted to post that after months of not buying this mag due to it becoming a bit stale for my liking, I went and got the latest issue and I have to say that it really is back to its best.

I thought it was excellent and if they added a bit more high def/standard def DVD reviews and some snippets about upcoming films, it would be my monthly magazine of choice as it would be perfect for my needs

A big congrats to the people who have re-done the magazine as Im a happy customer again.

I have only recently bought this mag, the last couple of issues and I have to say it is very good, informative, great reviews (where five stars means five stars). Great read, might even take out a sub

There's a free THX disc with this month's issue (selected copipes at WH Smith!). Not sure if it's the same disc as above or not.

Re: New look Home Cinema Choice now on sale - with free THX demo disc

Yep, it's the same disc as before, for those who missed out last time. We had so many requests that it made sense to give it a limited release again. However, it is only available in high street WH Smith stores (not train stations, as they are classified as WH Smith Travel - which is different).

So, essentially, if you missed out the first time, or want a second copy of the THX Demo Disc II, grab a copy of the current HCC at your local high street branch of WH Smith.

Hi Rik,

Did you not consider contacting your wholesalers S.O.R dept and request they retain all copies with the discs on them?

As a publisher, I'm pretty much certain that you have the right for them to retain and return them back to you. Save you guys some money surely

Would give you the chance of then offering them to Sainsburys stores, Tesco or Asda.

People are going crazy for these things on eBay and the like

Really? Why don't they just waddle down to WH Smith (I think there are one or two branches out there) and buy a copy?!

Oh they sell very well indeed on eBay.
You're looking at paying £14.99 on average!!?

To me and you, that's insane, but to someone from outside the UK it's a small price to pay in order to get this disc.

Sounds like a good get rich quick scheme to me.

(Waddles off to WH Smith to buy more copies.)

Rik henderson was you a videator on games world on sky one in the early to mid 90`s?

I remember you as the pirate guy, very entertaining character

Loved that show they should bring the same kind of format back to TV, i can't believe nobody has made a similar show with video game characters like WWE characters which the public have to beat to win prizes with so many satellite channels around now you would think with all the rubbish on someone would take the risk.
