It does both. I was a little disappointed in the colour via scart rgb as its a bit too rich but the progressive scan image via component is superb. Also has a full dts decoder so will decode dts sound tracks to your television and through headphones.
A little tip if you want more headphone output is to set front left and right channels to 6db instead of 0db in the audio options. You might have to do this for all channels if your actually using the built in 5.1 decoder and connecting via phonos to an amp.
It really is the most remarkable dvd bargain out there. Its a nice looking player, jam packed with features, excellent performance and a 3 year guarantee for £37.99. Its based on the Zoran Vaddis 6 chipset which is a chipset favoured by Arcam and Samsung. The JVC THA 35R uses the exact same chipset and has had excellent reviews for its picture and sound. The JVC is probably made by Samsung as were most of the earlier models.
If you can find one get it. Theres just nothing out there anywhere near the price that compares to it.
I had a Toshiba 330 and it was poor in comparision.
The only thing that goes against it is the slightly too rich colour via scart rgb. Apart from that the picture is both detailed and clean. I'm another AE100 user and it also gets a glowing recommendation from me.
Don't forget its also multiregion without any dodgy firmwares or special remotes so you'll never void your warranty and you can turn macrovision off.
