Recessed projector shelf into stud wall

All being well I should be in posession of a shiny new HD700X later this week.

It's going to live in the loft conversion of our bungalow. In order to make the most of the 3m throw distance I have between walls, my intention is to recess a shelf into the stud wall the projector is to go on, thus mitigating the distance it would take were I to simply wall mount it.

My DIY skills aren't great though, so I figured I run my plan past more experienced folk.

My idea is to cut out an aperture in the stud wall and mount an MDF box inside the hole, secured to the wall studs with a brace/bracket behind to take the weight.
I'll need an adjustable mounting plate inside the box as I'll need to mount the pj upside down and will no doubt have to dial in some adjustment to get it level with the screen.
Then paint it up in the same colour as the room and run cabling to it.

I have ample access to the back of the stud wall as there's plenty of walking space in the eves behind it, so the fitting *shouldn't* be too hard.

I'll need to find a suitable box to serve as the recessed shelf, or worse, have to make my own.

I'll also need some kind of mounting bracket for the projector. I'm guessing my best option is to get a cheap ceiling mount and then remove the bracket from that and attach it to the box.

Anything obvious I'm missing or advice how to approach?

Thanks for reading

Re: Recessed projector shelf into stud wall

Sounds very similar to something I planned to do in the near future but I was unsure if the approx 3m distance to the screen would be too close. What size image would this project and would the quailty be reduced? I don't have much knowledge of pj's but seeing as this unit is only around £400, I would be very interested how your project pans out. Good Luck

3m is good for roughly 84" to 90". Quality wise, the smaller the image projected the higher the image quality will be. But also remember the closer you sit the more you will notice imperfections in the image.
I'm going with an 84" screen, as my head will only be about 2.5ish meters from the screen.

I've decided to ease my way into my mini-project, so at the moment the projector will be shelf mounted. I'll be cutting a small channel to conceal the cabling in the wall cavity.

If I'm happy with the setup long term, then I'll cut out a full size alcove to mount it all in.

I recent trip to ikea found some ready made 'cube' shelving which will be sturdy enough to put my trust in and mount to the studs behind the wall.

At the moment I've only got the screen up so far, waiting on a few bits before I mount the PJ.

Will post some pics once I'm set up.
