Potential Costs

Hi guys,

I have been looking through these forums lately and looking at some of the setups on here. They are awesome!!!

What I am looking for is maybe some help regarding costs etc. Costs of materials to do a floating wall, costs of equipment etc. Basically all the money i'd have to spend. A rough idea would be good.

Re: Potential Costs

To construct a floating wall, you're going to need thing's like, timber studding - probably 3"x2", MDF, plasterboard, plaster, screws, nails etc. Plus all the tools to do the job.

When putting in the studding you will need to consider were your equipment is going to go, cable runs, power point etc. Also consider were the TV will sit as extra timber supports will be needed in that area.

Basically there is lots to consider apart from just building the wall.

Go to your local DIY store for the cost of materials and tools. It's impossible to give a cost for everything as you dont say what you want.

You'll need an idea of the size of wall to be built so that you can cost your materials etc.

Somewhere between £500 and £100,000.

Seriously though - people will be happy to help but you do really need to give a bit more info about what you want. At the moment your thread reads "I want to do some stuff, how much will it cost?"

If you post with a bit more info you'll get far better answers, so think about:

- what AV equipment do you have already, and what are you thinking of getting?
- what room in the house? Plus will it be a dedicated cinema room, floating wall in existing living room, something else?
- are you going to do the work yourself or get someone else to do it?
- what sort of finish do you want? e.g. speaker cables chased into walls, surface conduit etc

Have a bit more of a think about what you're planning to do, post some more detailed questions, and you'll get some more helpful answers

Re: Potential Costs

Just to clarify, a "floating wall" over there means a new wall placed in front of an old wall? This is a solid wall, not a false screen wall?

Thanks for the help

False screen wall, usually made out of mdf.Placed about 1 or 2 inches out from the wall using battons, wires etc can go behind.

Re: Potential Costs

Thank you for that. The wall is solid and rigid, then. Over here in the States, a "screen wall" is often a fabric covered wall with speakers behind it.

So your screen wall is rigid, covered in MDF. I assume the MDF is for additional density? Otherwise you could use plasterboard or less expensive plywood. Is that the case here?

Thanks again

Re: Potential Costs

I figured. Thanks. So the MDF is used to block sound or to have as a nail base?

Ted theres loads of pictures of floating walls.

The bottom this thread shows a floating wall
Gibbs Home Cinema

Although usually they would go from the ground up so you can hide your cables but you get the idea.

There are hundreds of floating wall threads on the forums

Re: Potential Costs

Got it. Wire hiding is the primary goal.

Thanks again. I'll check out the links you kindly provided

The pics say it all. THanks

Re: Potential Costs

I was thinking more of a floating wall to go over the chimney breast. But not on thats actually attatched to the wall. As I rent a house i dont want to be fixing something to the wall that i may hav to rip araprt when and if i move.

I was thinking that instead of screwing it to the wall, make sure it's structurally sound and maybe have weights at the bottom rear to stop it falling forward. If you know what i mean.
