Wall mounting a plasma - problem

Hi Everybody

We would love to wall mount our TV (Sammy 50") but the problem we have is that our walls are brick skin with some kind of eggbox material (best way to describe it) between the outer wall and the plasterboard.

So I know I can't mount it to that, but would it be possible to build a false/floating kind of wall strong enough to hang the plasma off?

Any help/advice would be greatly received.

Andy

Re: Wall mounting a plasma - problem

Surely some else must have come across this problem and had a brain wave on how to fix it / get round it.

Re: Wall mounting a plasma - problem

Hi. Yes one option would be to build a false or floating wall and there are a number of threads on these forums which deal with that.

Another option is to cut out a couple of wide, vertical "slots" (say 3 inches to 4 inches) in the plaster board, where you want to fix the TV wall bracket. Then, bolt a couple of pieces of 3"x3" or 4"x 4" (whatever the depth is between the face of the plaster board and brickwork) directly to the brickwork. Use wall bolts, frame fixings or chemical anchors - whichever takes your fancy. Make good any gaps and paint if necessary. Then screw the wall bracket to these "studs".

Well your fixings will go into the brick, not just the eggboxes. So it won't be a problem as long as the fixings are long enough to be secure in the brick.

Here's a pic of our mount (part way through the project). It sits happily on the plasterboard, and then the fixings go through into the breeze block.

I could hang a car off that thing...

Re: Wall mounting a plasma - problem

Thanks for the info Loz

but

our house has a brick outer skin and the inside is timber and this eggbox stuff then the plasterboard on top of that. I can't really show you unless I cut a whole in the wall and SWMBO would kill me if I start doing that

Cheers again

Andy

Re: Wall mounting a plasma - problem

Hi,
The eggbox stuff will be paramount wall. They are a 2"x1"ish wooden frame (8'x4') filled with the eggbox stuff then clad with plasterboard.
If you measure 4' or 1.2m from the end of the wall you should find timber..
I fixed up a 50" pioneer plasma to that timber plus added a few cavity fixings..
I was lucky the timber was exactly where i wanted to hang the tv..
Your best bet would be to do as deckingman says, If you are going to fix 4" timbers to the wall pre-drill half way through the timber with a 1"-2" bit, then a smaller hole for your fixing. You can then use a 4" fixing and get a good bite in to the external wall..

Oh, OK.
I must get up to date with modern construction techniques?

Re: Wall mounting a plasma - problem

Hi

How thick is the p/board 9.5mm or 12mm have a look at this pic

Fixings used Fischer UX (6 no) TV weighs about 35kg 42" Hitachi Plasma
only into p/board been on there since June 2006.

If you are confident the p/board is on correctly it amazing what it will support.

Re: Wall mounting a plasma - problem

Yeah it's easy to fit new sockets and the like, but when it comes to mounting something that weighs over 50lbs forget it

Hi

How heavy is the TV?
Look at Fischer,Rawl or Screwfix websites long framefixings
should do have seen a picture of a Fiat Panda hung
from ONE frame fixing oh and by the way it was on its trailer!

So if brickwork is ok you wont have any problems!
