Depth in a dot and dab wall?

Does anyone know what the depth usually is between the plasterboard and the brickwork in a dot and dab wall? Or would it vary between different developers?

it can vary i would say about inch to 2 inches

He He. I love your optimism ... I recently found out that the top of the plasterboard wall is 28mm from the brickwork, whilst the bottom is 16mm....... In fact it tended to vary depending on where I wanted to run cable!

I think its all down to how accurately and quickly the wall was put up.... Any professionals wish to comment ....

Still, the main thing is that it fits the cables / trunking you want to run......

hhmmm ok cheers wingnut, i would put a screw driver through where i'll be putting a hole for wires for behind the new units when i get them but the missus will see it! lol

Just take a socket face off on the wall youare wanting to use. Then you'll be either able to see through the backbox side or simply release the back box and check visually.

thing is it's not just for cabling. As i need to know the exact depth where the tv will be mounted as i intend to fix the mount to the brickwork.

So the depth of the gap needs to be same as the mount so the back of my tv is flush(ish) with the wall.

The only socket is the other end of the wall. All the sockets i use are on a side wall.

And like JMWS said the gap might not be the same everywhere.

I guess making a small hole in the correct place is my only option

the depth of a plasterboard cavity wall box is 35mm so i wouldnt have thought it would be any less than that so maybe im looking more toward 40mm?

Socket boxes are 25mm deep. usually the gap between the block and back of the board is about 10-15mm...

I am a sparky and screwing a 25mm box straight onto the block will leave the front of the box a few millimeters below the front surface of the plasterboard. Then the plasterboard is usually skimmed to about 2mm...

Yep! Its the only way that you'll know for sure. As Paul Burton44 said, the gap on dot and dab is "usually" 10-15mm, with 9/12.5mm palsterboard on top - so that's a range of 19 to 27.5mm. Then you've got any variation on the wall to consider. If you are definatly going to wall mount it, whats the issue with making a small hole? You can always hang a picture over it!

I think you should just cut out where your bracket is going to go because then you are committed to finish whatever you start so the depth of the plaster wouldnt matter as you could then re- plaster???

I would mate but i need to sell the current stand first before i can do anything. It could be weeks before it sells and i don't want a big hole in the wall in the mean time haha
