Finishing MDF wall

Following on from my previous thread, I've now constructed my new wall. Now some of the joins and not too good so I have used multi purpose filler on this. I have started sanding this morning using some rough grade sandpaper first then smooth but don't seem to be able to get a nice smooth join between any 2 pieces of wood.
What has everyone else done?

Im not sure multipurpose filler would be up to the job? Is it polyfilla type stuff? Ive learnt through the process of my build to never use premixed filler again! Self mix stuff is so much better! But thats a whole other arguement.

If its a floating wall, then P38 car filler is what Groove used (one of the first floating walls). Personally I used Ronseal wood filler. Both types are like an epoxy so you have to mix in an activator.

If I were you, I'd go and get one of those electric 'mice' sanders. Itll make the process not only easier, but it should allow you to do a much better job of 'blending' the joins.

it also helps to cut a small v groove on the joint first so you have some thing to fill

What would you recommend to do that with dean?

just use a planer,just take the edge of at a angle,45 degrees odd,so there is a bigger contact area for the filler to grab,

arghhhhhhhhhhh i used p38 filler and it cracked,so i have raked it out and just used wicks flexible filler

but like you said , thats a whole other arguement

I've used wickes flexible filler also. I do have some P38 but not used any yet.
A coat of wood sealer has been applied now and I am going to fill again over this to see what finish I get. One of those mice sanders would make it easier.... hmm

I used P38 between MDF joins and it keeps cracking. I didnt have angles at the joins but now i cant take the MDF boards off. What can i do to resolve?

there is movement if it is cracking. It is always a good idea to glue the boards together when jointing and v groove prior to filling jst so there is some thing to fill. Not really sure what to resolve you problem

Ive got a overlapping batten running down between the joins so im not sure where or how the movement has happended.

Could the cracks be apearing because i butt joined without any filler / glue between them. The P38 filler was laid over the mdf join?

Could i router down the join to get a v shape to refill? Would this solve the problem?

I've just built a MDF wall too, my intentions were to wallpaper it like my other floating wall, I've now changed my mind and am going to paint it and think I'm going to have the very same problem as you

I used a Dremel with a steel cutter (for sinks etc.) to create the v-groove and used special mdf-filler from Albastine (the sanding dust of the filler even tastes like mdf)...

So I can use a dremel on the NSF without taking it down?

I just ran the Dremel Tungsten Carbide Cutter (9909) through the joins to create the v-groove...

I need to dig out and refill the joint between the panels. Whats the best thing to fill the joint with. Ronseal flexible wood filler, P38 or Alabastine?
