Loft Conversion

Hello people,

I am currently in the middle of converting my loft space into a office/HT, O.K mostly a HT but don't tell the GF!!

The floor is boarded and insulated with your standard mm rockwool and have purchased sheets of mm thick rockwool slabs to insulate the rafters. Now heres where the problem starts!!

Started to fit the slabs of insulation between the rafters which caused a few issues as they just fell out again, so i went off and purchased 3 rolls of foil backed laminate floor membrane to hold all the insulation in. Worked a treat as well as a good sound / heat insulator. Now I'm half way through the job which i had left for a week or two i have now noticed condensation on the roofing felt, which is all being soaked up by the insulation.

I have been reading posts on here and other sites, which is all adding to my confusion! My roof rafters are 75mm deep hence why i used the 50mm slabs trying to leave 25mm air gap! I haven't got any vents fitted to my soffits and can't see how the air is getting in anyway. There is plenty of air movement in the loft as the cobwebs are flapping around everywhere!!

My plans were to build a sealed room inside the loft surrounded with the insulation leaving a space of 4M x 4M x 2m max headroom.

If there is anyone out there that can help, then please, please let me know what you think, bearing in mind this project is on a strict budget.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Loft Conversion

hi i had similar problems with condensation and was advised by roofer that either sofit or ridge vents would be needed since fitting them no problems !

Re: Loft Conversion

Wow, that was a quick reply!!

Which vent did you go for soffit, ridge or both ? I,ve been told you need soffit vents for incoming air and ridge vents for the outgoing air!

Soffit vents ain't going to be a problem to fit, but ridge vents could be a different matter.

Thanks,

Re: Loft Conversion

I went for the ridge vents as i came to the conclusion that the hot air rises ! shouldn't be a big job best to contact a good local roofer !
