Behind my plasma - not enough room!!

About to mount my plasma with a Vogel mount which has 40mm of room behind it.

Thats not enough room for plugs, scart HDMI etc.

I like the idea of the TV being as close to the wall as poss but also don't want to have to leave messy recesses in the wall.

Ideally I would like a recessed plug socket (can find US ones but not UK ones) and something to give room for the scart (happy using a 90 degree converter for HDMI).

These days if I went to V+ I think I can use HDMI for my TV as well - what will I need Scart for in the future - is it redundant these days?

Am I best returning my mount and getting one with more clearance?

Suprised there is not more on the forum about recessed sockets.....or with 40mm will I just be able to squeeze it in there?

PS I am connecting VirginMedia (scart) and PS3 (HDMI) at the moment.

Re: Behind my plasma - not enough room!!

You can get ribbon scarts that may squeeze in. Also, some tellys are not suppose to be too close to a rear wall for ventillation purposes.

Re: Behind my plasma - not enough room!!

The cable usually comes out of a scart plug at an angle anyway, won't that be enough to fit in the gap between TV and wall? If plugging it in is awkward while it is hung, why not plug in all your cables first?

I have all kinds of cables in my setup and the TV is about 50mm from the wall, could probably go closer if I wanted it to. My component & HDMI cables take up more space than a scart just because they come straight out, if that makes sense.

Re: Behind my plasma - not enough room!!

I bought an expensive scart so would rather not buy another.

On my TV the scart comes straight out the back and is a really stiff cable - I reckon it needs 8cm of clearance!

I considered trying to get the hole I'm going to make exactly behind the scart but it leave me no option to adjust height of TV.

What do you guys use scart for that HDMI does not do better? (not provoking anything - genuine question!)

My scart is from my VM box which I reckon i can ditch for V+.....

Hehe, you trying to start a fight?

I only have one scart lead ( a very big and chunky one!) for the sky+ box. I refuse to get Sky HD until there is more content and/or they drop the £10/month surcharge for it (dream on...). There are other things that you might have a scart lead for but no HDMI option - Wii for example if you are into that sort of thing.

Re: Behind my plasma - not enough room!!

Hi

I am currently building my HC in a converted loft and I'm facing the question of which cables to put in a wall channel. I don't really fancy having to try and pull more at a later date. I do intend to have a HDMI AVR (probably a denon 1909) so I'm wondering if I can get away with just feeding 1 HDMI and the power (I've also been wondering about sticking a cat5 in there too recently just in case a future tv has some sort of network/internet thing going on).

Do I need a component for any reason or should I be ok with just the HDMI? I don't intend to use the built in tuner so don't need a audio return either

Thanks

Eric

Hi EriX,

It really depends what kit you have now and what you are likely to get in the future...
