Wall mounting - Dot and Dab

I've been reading various threads about wall mounting TV's to dot and dab plasterboard walls and people have said to cut out the plasterboard where the mount is going and mount directly to the blocks behind.

Would just bolting a bracket through the plasterboard and into the blocks make any difference at all? Or will there be some strain on the plasterboard still hence why people have said to cut out the plasterboard?

The reason i ask this is when fixing a frame for a floating wall you would fix through the plasterboard into the brickwork behind?

Re: Wall mounting - Dot and Dab

Hi mate,

the reason i didn't just mount on the plasterboard is if you do it would be very easy to over tighten the bolts and bend/crack the plasterboard. when i did mine i marked on the plasterboard where the holes needed to be and then using a hole saw cut a 20mm diameter hole through to the block work, i then cut some spacers using an old broom handle that came flush to the plasterboard surface and drilled a hole through the middle, i put the projecting anchor bolts into the block, put the spacers over and then bolted on the mount.

Re: Wall mounting - Dot and Dab

Ok mate thanks for the tip. I'm wanting my screen as level to the new wall as possible so after thinking about it cutting some plasterboard out could be a good idea. Just don't like the sound of doing it!!!

Re: Wall mounting - Dot and Dab

I never sunk mine in, but wish i did now, but it's fine has been for over 2 years - For cutting the plaster board there is a plasterboard saw you can get for a few quid, which is worth it as it makes the job a lot easier!

Re: Wall mounting - Dot and Dab

thanks for the info guys. One thing im concerned about sinking the screen into the plasterboard directly onto the block behind would there be much dust and dirt in there that would get into my tv's vents?

Re: Wall mounting - Dot and Dab

If like my walls you will have around half an inch gap between brick and PB, i'd just fill the edges up with plaster so the cut out is sealed if you get me. Does not have to be a top job as it will not be seen!

Re: Wall mounting - Dot and Dab

Good idea as i was intending to use plasterboard for the new wall anyway with a skim of plaster over the top i can do the gaps at the same time!

One question regarding the frame for the new wall, do people leave a gap in it somewhere so the wires can be sent down behind the plaster/mdf to all the equipment?

Re: Wall mounting - Dot and Dab

No need for any of that

RIGIFIX bolts solve this issue and are installed in minutes and cost less than £10 for 6!

Re: Wall mounting - Dot and Dab

ah, thought you were only on about doing that because thats what you had been told - just bear in mind the issue getting cables to it, the heat in the gap and the big ugly hole should you ever move it
