You can get veneered MDF with "real" wood finishes, available in oak ash etc, would just need a black stain and finish applied.

Most good wood yards should sell it.

Melamine normaly has a chipboard core which isnt as strong as MDF.

is there not any iron on stuff available to do this kind of stuff?

its gonna be hidden away but will be just viewable so if its glimpsed i want it to at least look a little similar to the rest of my speakers?

You can get an iron on veneer for the edges but i think the widest is 50mm

some veneer products here

Another possibility would be a vinyl wood effect wrap like Fablon, some of those look quite realistic.

Re: home made sub box requires black wood finish!??

You can buy veneered MDF.
You could then lightly spray/paint the veneer to keep the grain.
You would then need to varnish to finish etc.

If you have already started, then you could try HERE for some veneers.

Or this is the melamine product you need. (click here)
You will need to search a bit to get it over here etc...
