Speaker shelves-Glue, mastic, or screw?

I am in the process of building some cupboards either side of my chimney breast. These cupboards will have a top to them, most likely of softwood, about 35mm thick, which will have bookshelf speakers on top (possibly mounted on granite blocks, as suggested elsewhere) The cupboards are constructed of 2x2 batens, with plasterboard fronts.
Should I screw these tops directly to the frame, or use mastic (I think I have some accoustic mastic somewhere), or put a plasterboard top on, then fix the wood to this?
Any thoughts greatly appreciated
