New lounge set up floating wall!

It's been 5 years since my last major outlay on new kit so I managed to get approval from SWMBO to spend some of my hard eared cash.

This is how the room used to look :-

With the old kit set up like this :-

First choice was what new colour to paint the room...

Then with the colours chosen, time to blank it all off so that I got no nasty dark/light patches when doing the main paint.

The frame was fixed at the start of this week, using 75mm x 44mm kiln dryed timber fixed with 115mm long frame fixing bolts.

OH got impatient and wanted me to start painting the walls...

Found a nice complimenting range of light / socket outlets at Homebase :-

I used to use one of therse for TV / FM and SAT from the loft down one cable but this time it's just for VHF and UHF :-

Wife hates seeing cables etc, so I have painted the area which will be behind the Alphason cabinets and exposed by the MDF cutouts matt black so it keeps it as dark as possible on the offchance you are lying on the floor looking through the cabinets!!!

And finally put together the shelving for the chimney brest alcoves, they are Expedit shelving units from IKEA but I had to paint some hardboard matt black and affix them as backpanels, here's before and after:-

That's it for now, main wall to paint tomorrow, ropelight to install, plasma also arrives so i can mount the bracket on it and work out where I need to add extra batons to hold the thing on the wall.

I have been paranoid about getting everything fixed to the wall correctly and bit the bullit last night and grabbed the top timber and held on for dear life, thnkning being if it can take the weight of me (130kg!) then it can hold up a 45kg plasma!

What colours did you choose for your walls?

The main feature wall and floating wall will be Sailsbury Stones 1 (pictures tonight) and the other three remaining walls in the room are one shade lighter at Salisbury Stones 2.

They are both from the Dulux range. They are from the colour mixing machine and we chose the FLAT MATT option as we have noticed this gives a very solid feel to the colour.

Looking good so far. Will be keeping an eye on this for any ideas over my imminient floating wall build as it looks to be a similar size. You going for the Groove-approved ropelight from TLC?

Yes, the rope lighting has just been installed 5 minutes ago !!!!

Do the clips REALLY need 2 screws!

Been hard at work today as this guy arrived

Managed to get the rope light installed along with a couple of coats of the paint.
Modified the frame slightly to lessen the bend radius of the rope light.

Once I knew how the screen would be positioned relative to the bracket, I fixed the additional timbers and mounted the bracket. (It's actually held up by 16 115mm x 10mm frame fixing screws, a bit OTT I know!)

And this is where we are up to...still nervous about the screen just "hanging" there

Gotta love the rope lights. I've been talked into a 42" screen (we'll be anywhere from 8-13ft from it) but I reckon our room could take a 46" or even a 50". That screen looks immense.

Looks good, but I am still a bit puzzled by people chosing to build a floating wall only to then mount the screen on it. Why not mount the screen on the wall then build the floating wall around it? That would surely give a much flusher / flatter TV look.

What made you do it like this?

I suppose theres many reasons to this, one being the amount of dirt/dust that you could get in/on your TV. Also if you where to build the wall around your TV it would be almost impossible to remove if there was a problem.

I'm very much liking these floating walls, so much so I'm tempted to build one in my bedroom, the only problem is I don't know if theres any point.

Would look even better with a Pana Plasma!
