How to get power to a detached garage...?

Hi,

Sorry this might not be quite on the subject of home AV DIY but there seems to be a wealth of knowledge here that might be able to help me.

I have a detached garage located a short distance from my house, and at the moment it has no power/lighting.

This gives a quick view of the locations.

Now I'd really like to consider getting power and lighting to the garage but am not quite sure how it will be done, especially as it will have to pass my neighbours houses to get there from my house.

Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Do either of the other garages have power? If not are the owners of those garages the house owners next to you? Are they interested in having power to their garages?

The only options you have really are under ground or over the top, obviously going under ground means creating a chanel and using suitable cable to drop in (steel wired armoured) SWA. Going over the top would involve a catinary wire, this is a small steel cable that you attach to both buildings and pull taught, you then attach your power cable to this, Using this method though you have to remember it has to be high enough to allow tall vehicles under.

At present none of the garages have power, and from seeing what the neighbours garages are used for I wouldnt imagine having power is a priority for them. On the other hand they are both very friendly and I assume that they would both be very co-operative in letting me go across their houses.

With regards to under ground or over, I think over would be easier. Im not sure how the power would be taken from the house but it could run up the back of ours, along the underside of the neighbours, and then across to the garage. I think that the distance from the end house to the garage would be 4-5 metres. Ideally though I prefer the idea of going underground as it would look less unsightly.

This shows the gap between the end house and the garage which is a pathway to our garden, so am I right in thinking that I could come down the side of the house and channel under the pathway and across to the garage?

If not then it might be above...

As you can see its not a massive gap, so I think that should be fairly simple.

When it comes to doing this, what will I need to get/do legally? i.e. will I just need the neighbours permission to go across their houses?

Also how is the power actually taken from my house?

I'd suggest doing it legally as in getting a solicitor to write up an agreement. These friendly agreements are fine until one of the neighbours moves or you fall out with them.

With regard to the cable itself, generally they need to be 18 inches below ground if they're on your property, outside your boundary may be a different matter though so best check it out with a qualified sparky rather than someone who thinks they're a sparky

They certainly will, what a shame Part P is such a mess.
