Talking My ever changing Home Cinema....advice needed!!

hi all

After many hours of trawling these threads, i thought it was time i posted about my mini HT that i started last year and am seeking advice as to where i should go next with it.

I have a wall mounted samsung with sky hd and a toshiba Hd ep30, and am yet to invest in a decent av reciever but currently run my sound via component through my sony dav sc5.

You will have to excuse the fire as im funding my HT before i change it!! (get my priorities right lol)
now for the advice part, i have just invested in some Mordaunt Short 302's and a MS 304 centre which i want to mount into the fire surround (MDF) as i feel it will aesthetically look good and also help with the sound.
My second problem is that i cant decide whether to build a false chimney breast to encase the tv which will also have lights (DIODER ones from ikea) fitted behind it to help with my poor eyes!

Any ideas would be much appreciated and feedback would be good as well.

Thanks guys

Ric

Hi kobeoneHD,

There is an excellent project here where Elootos has flush mounted some MS302's in a false chimney. Its worth the trawl! I think it looks good, but as always, YMMV

Hope that helps.

Re: My ever changing Home Cinema....advice needed!!

hello again

After some deliberation i have decided on going for a floating wall effect with rope light behind it (found a great supplier here www.tlc-direct.co.uk very cheap).
Anyways im just waiting for the delivery of the lights and my new speakers then i will begin the work so hopefully will keep pictures coming.

Thanks guys
Rich

Re: My ever changing Home Cinema....advice needed!!

Just my opinion of course so no offence intended. I think your TV is far too high where it is.
Personally I'd get rid of the fire, if you have a decent fireplace mount the TV a lot lower (middle at eye level is ideal) and build a unit/shelfs into the Fireplace for your AV stuff, maybe glass shelves

Re: My ever changing Home Cinema....advice needed!!

Hi jimbob, yeah i agree with you on the tv height but unfortunately the wall has the back boiler in it and the £3000 needed to relocate it and put in new rads isnt in my budget, not till later in the year anyways. i like the idea of the av kit being in the wall nice touch, still lots to consider tho, but thanks for the input!

Re: My ever changing Home Cinema....advice needed!!

ok im back again

After having spent all day building my own small floating wall, i can now put up the pics of the work as it went along.
Im lucky in the fact that i work for B&Q so i can get a lot of my materials (and power tools) cheaper than most so this whole floating wall including the rope lights only cost me £30.

I think its looks good for my room but it may still change when i do my boiler later in the year which will also get rid of my horrible fire (see pics).

Any way here's the pics.

1. The stud wall being tried
2. The evolution of the stud wall fixed in place
3. Rope lights attached and tested - I love these.
4. MDF board cut and put in place. (the wall mount only cost me £23 as i have a mate who works in the business and so got it trade for me. Very strong can hold upto 63" TV.
5. Fire surround is tried for fitting and looks.
6. first coat of paint after loads of filling and sanding.
7. Second and third coat of paint - now starting to blend in
8. TV mounted and fixed in place.
9. Room put back together waiting for the other half to see it (she does'nt believe the lights will make a difference)

Anyway thanks for checking out my mini thread and my mini floating wall, any comments are appreciated.

Nice one mate!

How have you hidden the rope light going into the false wall?

And how did you attach it to the battons?

Well when i bought the rope light from TLC-direct i bought a pack of clips that just screw to the batons and the rope just clips into this. As for hiding the rope into the wall. i just drilled 20mm whole using a spade bit and gently fed the light through this so the power runs behind the wall down behind the fire surround and into a remote controlled socket.

Thanks for looking

Re: My ever changing Home Cinema....advice needed!!

Hi there, neatly encorporated set up, can I ask did you make the AV unit yourself? If so, its exactly what I'm looking for in my room, do you have any photos of it being put together?

Re: My ever changing Home Cinema....advice needed!!

Like the room, great work. As we have just ordered a retro purple cinema style sofa for our project we're now looking at colours - what paint did you use?

Cheers
