Gloss on MDF

In process of making new equipment stand - cut all pieces to fit and glossed the legs leaving the two big peices of MDF for another time.

The other half thinking was helping has come and glossed both pieces for me perfectly - nice clean tidy finish. However ...................

No undercoat was put on. Now how will this effect things ? Is it ruined ? Will it ever dry ? Can it be fixed

Re: Gloss on MDF

I glossed an MDF door at my parents place without undercoating, and the paint gradually got absorbed by the MDF and eventually started to peel.

Yeah that seems to be whats happening here
Looks like may be ruined - not sure if another coat would help

Guess I could try letting it dry - rubbing down and then undercoating first

I think that will work, the cut edges of the mdf need special treatment

Re: Gloss on MDF

Seems as if one side at least may be ok - forcebly run hand down it and its smooth and dry with no signs of peeling - the other side though is a mess

Re: Gloss on MDF

Bit late for dunkle, but for MDF I would recommend you always paint with special MDF primer first. MDF is very absorbent, especially on the cut edges, and you can easily make it swell. The proper primer seals this, ready for you to paint as normal. You can buy it in B&Q.

Cheers,
MarkP

LOL

I have a big pot of it already - just a shame was beaten to it

Going to try sanding it all down and starting again

Re: Gloss on MDF

Can you not seal MDF with a PVA and water mix?
