Home Cinema - best mounting place advice needed.

Hi all. I need some advice on installing my new home cinema. I am thinking of either putting it above the fire (where the mirror is) building a false wall about 3" deep and setting the TV into it, so it doesn't look like it's sticking out too much. Asthetically I think this would be best, but would it be too high for comfortable viewing? The only other way I can think is to mount it on the wall where my current TV is ( maybe a foot higher) on a tilt swivel mount that can go back to the wall when we aren't watching it, and pull out to be like a corner mount when watching it. Anyone any ideas?

if i was you i would get a swivel mount that can swivel across the window when your watching it,so that it is directly in front of the couch.the fireplace is way too high for the size of the room,im a big fan of having them eye level tbh,i hate goin to houses where they are high,it annoys me.

also the benefit of having it swivel accross the window is that you can have it eye level,it would probably be slightly over the radiator at eye level,but the curtains will take some of the heat,so as not to damage the tv. and when not swivelled it will sit exactly where your current tv is,and you could even tilt it,so it would be identical to how it is currently set up

Thanks for reply. I know deep down you're right about the height thing - I guess I am hoping I would get used to watching it in that position because it would look great up there! I would even consider getting rid of the fire surround so I could have it a bit lower, but I dont want the fireplace to end up looking stupid!
I should have said that our normal seating position is directly facing that wall ( on the red sofa) rather than facing the window on the cream sofa.

then do the excact same thing i suggested but put it on the fireplace wall,where the tv is currently,it would swivel out in front of the firplace and u could put it eye level,when the fire is in use just keep it unswivelled where the tv is currently

Right I think I have got it! After browsing this excellent forum and looking at other peoples ideas I think I have decided to get rid of the fire. It will give me so many options rather than a compromise. I say get rid of the fire, but I mean hide it behind a floating wall - just remove the marble hearth and fire surround. We are having a carpet so the hole in the laminate where the hearth was wouldn't matter. I have seen this great design on this forum and I think it would suit my room. What do you think? Any comments welcomed.

IMO ripping out the fire would give you the best placement, although the most extreme. Above the fire at the moment would be too high, but then 9 out of 10 wallmounts I see are too high in my opinion, I don't know how the owners avoid a sore neck from looking up all the time!

The floating wall is a nice thing, but I don't think the wall you are looking to mount the tv on is wide enough for the proper effect. You may be better off just getting a fairly flush mount.

I think my room looks narrower in the photo's than it is in reality. Although not huge, its 12'3" wide. Do you think its too small now you know the measurements? By my reckoning its about 2-3' narrower than the one in the photo. I dont plan on ripping the fire out, only the surround and the marble hearth - the rest will remain intact, hidden behind the floating wall. Thanks for your reply - I am interested in all opinions and any ideas.

Wow it does look smaller in the pic. I would go for it, stevelup did one here which is the same size if not smaller. New in wall system

Thanks for the link. It looks good doesn't it! There are so many ideas floating about in my head I'm getting dizzy. Better than no ideas I suppose
