Projector cabinet/hush box advice.

Hey.

I‘ve already posted in a different section of the forum asking where I might be able to buy one of these, but if it comes down to having to build one I'm going to need some advice.

I have just bought this projector and everything is great except for the fan noise.

I've had it wall mounted (instead of ceiling mounted) due to lots of different problems. So I guess I’ll have to make a fully closed hush box.

I probably won't be building it personally because I'm terrible when it comes to DIY, but I have a friend who is willing to help as long as I have a rough idea of what's needed.

Things I need advice on:

1. Obviously I don’t want it to overheat, but what’s the best way to prevent this? The fan exhaust is at the back right hand side of the projector. If I cut circular holes in the cabinet above and below this point of exhaust and fitted fans to keep the air flow moving, would this work? Plus would I have to have a certain amount of free space at the back of the box where the projector’s fan exhaust is?

2. What’s the best type of material to line the box with? Obviously I’ll need something that’s good at muffling sound, but if I use something like foam, will this not retain heat and cause it to over heat.

3. When I make the front of the cabinet, is there a type of glass I can use that won’t distort the image that’s being projected? Or am I best just cutting a hole that’s just big enough to fit the lens through?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

PS. I live in the UK (in between Liverpool and Manchester), if you know of anywhere that sells these I'll probably just buy one, or if you know of a place that might be able to help me out then let me know. Thanks again.

Re: Projector cabinet/hush box advice.

I know I haven’t left it very long, but has no one got any advice?

I really want to get this sorted ASAP.

Here are some very amateur "design pictures" that I made in paint. Just the basic idea of what I think will work (but let me remind you I have no real knowledge on this subject what so ever).

Could someone point out any major design flaws, or recommend something that might work better or just any general advice on my original question.

Thank you.

(Let me know if I need to explain any part of these so diagrams)

Re: Projector cabinet/hush box advice.

I was thinking of building one and found the following links:

good thread here:

and here:

I've also seen a few where they incorporated the box into furniture (e.g. a book case (where you can store DVDs) with an enclosed area at the top for the PJ.

Seems to be a lot more popular on AVS forums in the States. The threads disuss some of your questions.

Let us know how you get on.

Re: Projector cabinet/hush box advice.

Thanks for you reply, I'm having a look through now and trying to dig out any useful info.

I don't have room for building it into a book shelf as its above my bed.

It's wall mounted at the moment. I am unable to mount it to the ceiling or have holes going into my attic to vent air. I just need to build a box that holds my projector and doesn't let it over heat.

I don;t have a clue about stuff like this but I'm sure there are plently of people on this forum who could answer my question. But no one seems to want to help. I've posted the same question on AVS forum and had no luck there either.

This might be a better design. I don't know:

This thread has had 75 hits. Surely theres at least one person who could just tell me:

1. will this design work? Yes/No

2. If not then why?

3. What else I might need to include.

Please.... any help?

Re: Projector cabinet/hush box advice.

I think that one larger fan on the top of the box (venting the air out) might be better as it won't have to move as fast (and therefore potentially quieter) to shift the same amount as air as smaller ones. This seems to be what people do for cooling HTPC cases for instance - slower larger fans. Maybe then have the intake holes in the bottom of the box so that you don't have to leave a big gap at the back for the outlets against the wall?

Re: Projector cabinet/hush box advice.

Thanks for your advice waf-tastic.

You seem to be the only one on here with any.

Think I'll search a few more forums before jumping in to anything.
