BT Master socket move and upgrade.
I have read a few threads on these forums, but none seem to answer exactly what I want to achieve.
I own an old property where the BT line into the house is off a telegraph pole and the wire runs down the outside of the house to a master box (very old style) and then more wires are taken from this box back out to further extensions around the house. All wires are run on the outside of the property.
The master box is mounted on the inside of my front door frame, so a hole has been drilled through the frame and the wire feed through to this master box.
Now...I am having the door and frame etc replaced and do NOT want this new oak frame drilled into. I therefore want to put a new NTe5 style master socket with inbuilt ADSL filters mounted on an inside wall approx 2.5 metres from where it is currently.
The wires on the outside of the house will be long enough and I can actually probably run them neater to the new position.
My question is...What is the best way to get a new style NTe5 Master socket fitted. I have just spoken to BT India and they are so unhelpful but still require £150 for this to be done.
I am happy to do it myself. Could someone recommend the best way to go about doing this and what I will need. Thanks
I have attached a pic of what I currently have.

Re: BT Master socket move and upgrade.
In my last house I had some ancient small brown box that my phone was connected directly to (IIRC). I got hold of a master box, which was a task in itself at that time, but I think B&Q, etc sell them these days and connected it myself to the brown box, allowing me to plug in a 'modern' phone and return the rented BT one. (Did say it was a while ago ).
I can't remember what colour the wires were in the small box or even how many there were, but as I wasn't on the net at the time I probably got the wiring info by looking at a friend's master box. Nowadays, we have Google, so see the link I've posted for details.

Hope this helps.

Cool, thanks Kelvin. As I thought. Just now where to get a BT master box, I'll try B&Q or there are loads of online retailers I see selling this related hardware.

Re: BT Master socket move and upgrade.
Your breaking the law by modifying the existing cabling like that. It will be obvious too because any NTE5 you buy will not have the BT logo on it

Re: BT Master socket move and upgrade.
There's loads of BT branded NTE5 boxes on ebay.
I wouldn't give 2 ***** about BT or breaking the law. Moving a master socket has gotta be one of the easiest DIY jobs you can do so why pay BT £150?
When you move it, you run the risk of getting a slight shock if the phone rings while you're doing it. Therefore, do it late at night.

hello good people
need some help I am trying to fix ADSL MASTER FACEPLATE SPLITTER to improve the connection and to avoid dropping of connection to the BT MASTER socket. I have also connection going to the first floor from master socket.
socket has 1 green/white 1 blue/white 1 orange/white 1 white/orange 1 white/blue 1 white/green
adsl master faceplat splitter has connector 2, 3, 4, 5, A, B.
when i opened the socket I thought i had some idea where these wires should go as they were all connected to BT MASTER SOCKET which had connector 2,3,4,5 only.
If i use the standard advise given here(i.e blue/white to connector 2 white/blue to connector 5 etc) then first floor phone does not work.so obviously something is wrong. I have very limited knowledge of this will appreciate any help all I need to know is where these wires go...many thanks in advance

Re: BT Master socket move and upgrade.
Sorry all for the delayed reply, I have been away on business. Thanks for all the comments, very helpful and I shall now give this a go.
I understand that BT don't want me performing this task, but I'll be ****ed if I am giving them £150 to do a 10 min job. Their customer service and my initial enquiry was handled so poorly they don't even deserve the business. I am sure I can get a BT branded NTE5 master box from somewhere.

You also need to connect the Orange/White to #3 for the ringer. Failing that just open both sockets and just ensure you have the same colour wires going to the same numbers on each socket.

Re: BT Master socket move and upgrade.
Hi all,
This is my first post and would really appreciate some help!
I have found the main phone line that enters my flat, and it attaches to a small panel rather than a NTE5 Master socket. All of my phone extensions are connected to this small panel also (It looks like a really old set up).
I do have an original BT NTE5 Master Socket at hand, and I was wondering if it would be an easy job to hook up the main wire to this, instead of the small panel?
As it stands, I don't have a test socket for checking BB speeds, testing line etc.
I did think that as I have a BT line, but no master/test socket, that BT would fit one for free...but apparently it would cost me £116 callout, £99 per hour after).
Any advice would be really appreciated (what wires go where ect)
Thanks guys.
