Exclamation Mounting plasma/lcd TV within a 4" plasterboard wall flush

I am trying to mount a few plasma TV 42" into a plasterboard stud walls so that it is flush with the wall whenfinished.

All the threads I have seen so far seem to show TVsitting proud of the wall.

The wall is made using 4" x2" timber to stud as a minimum but in other placesthe wall are double studded offering a total of 8" depth.

Any ideas how I do this?

A few issues come to come to mind initially:
  1. Ventilation of the unit - vent above and below?
  2. How do you cover the gap between the tv edge and the rough edge of the plasterboard?
  3. Bracket for the tv - is there such a bracket that allows one to push-clip the tv into place rather than having to lift it onto hooks as this will mean the gap between the tv edge and the plasterboard increases?

Here is a photo example of the installation so far.

The aim would be the cut out the stud work for the TV size. Then somehow secure the TV to the studwork.

Moving to the Home Cinema DIY section which is more appropriate.

Try uploading your pictures to somewhere like Photobox

Re: Mounting plasma/lcd TV within a 4" plasterboard wall flush

This was EXACTLY what I wanted to do with my Plasma install... flush mount it.

Ventilation
Suggestions I was given was to install fans on the sides of the wall and grills above and below the TV.

Plasterboard
Let the TV site a little proud of the wall and run it in just behine the frame.

I was put off the idea as the fans and grills would look a bit unsightly, the precision required on fitting the plasterboard to within mm of the TV frame would be , and I'd have trouble getting to the back of the TV for cable access and power etc.

So I conceeded defeat and have built a recess in the wall and put the TV in there, leaving 10cm around the edge of the TV on all sides.

The TV screen is flush with the main wall, but all the cables, bracket etc are in the recess.

Re: Mounting plasma/lcd TV within a 4" plasterboard wall flush

dos1001 - hopefully my old thread may help answer a couple of your questions.

My install

1. As long as you have some way of creating airflow to take the heat away from the tv then it shouldn't be an issue, either a grill somewhere above the tv and/or a fan.

2. Just board up to the TV as close as you want to, plasterboard has a sealed edge along one side, use that as the edge that will butt up to the tv (would advise leaving a few mm gap though) as it will give a nice straight finish. The edge can be treated and painted to match the rest of the decor. Also you can overlap the bare cut edges with lining paper and then paint that.

3. There are a few ways to achieve mounting the tv, you could cut a larger hole, cable everything up and then patch up the gap that you don't want with new plasterboard. Then skim the wall or joint fill the gaps. Alternatively you can buy extending brackets like the vogels one in my thread, they allow you to mount the tv and then push it back into position. I went with the vogels option to allow rear access but have never moved the tv since it has been up.
