New in wall system

Hi Folks,

We moved house a little over a year ago and whilst the new house is much bigger than the old one, the cinema room is much smaller.

With this in mind, I decided the best thing to do was to go for in wall speakers to maximise the amount of space in the room.

Full size images can be found here.

===

This is the back of the room which will eventually house a 6ft x 2ft x 2ft marine aquarium. This will be open on both sides so it will be viewable from both the kitchen and living room.

Old wall coming down.

Done...

These are the supports for the aquarium.

The front of the room... Our lovely feature fireplace. I started dismantling this carefully from the top as you can see. I then discovered that there was nothing actually holding the thing up apart from good luck...

... so I decided brute force was the answer...

... CRASH ... That was fun!

Cutting holes in the ceiling for cables and projection screen.

There used to be a floor standing boiler in the kitchen. This hole will become the video rack housing the source equipment and AV amplifier. There is another similar hole in the kitchen which is housing the audio / network equipment.

Big hole in the wall for a Lutron Grafik Eye 3103

Power and audio for the subwoofer

Screen test...

Cables (not the most exciting picture I know...)

Another shot of the AV rack location.

Cables hanging ready...

Hi Steve

Looking good mate. Can't wait for more pictures - especially the aquarium. I miss our tropical tank, but it was too much work - i'd imaging the marine tank is even more up-keep.

Re: New in wall system

Thanks - I'll be sure to keep this thread updated.

The tank won't be happening until next year as I've run out of money. We've been renovating the whole house and I've still got the downstairs bathroom to complete yet.

I doubt I'll touch the tank until the last drop of paint has dried everywhere else

Allan's thread has made me feel really guilty about the shabbily slow progress I've made over the past year!

Re: New in wall system

Hi

Small update...

Got the framework up on the wall. This is going to house the LCR6 speakers and the plasma display (flush mounted).

Close up of the left speaker mounting...

.. and the centre.

stevelup, Keep up the good work... its starting to come together nicely.

Can I ask, what kind of ambient/room lighting are you going to use?

Re: New in wall system

Hi

Standard halogen downlighters on two zones.

The third zone will be cold cathode neon behind the floating wall.

I've already used it in the kitchen and prefer it to the ropelight stuff. It's more expensive though but...

Re: New in wall system

Thanks...

I know the name says it all (cold cathode neon) but I'll ask nonetheless.. how much heat does this generate? Its it cold to the touch?

The reason I ask is I'm looking for a lighting system that provides a very smooth/even spread of light for behind an LCD I'm about to buy. I've seen the 'light-sticks' but I'm not sure that's a route I want to go down.

Got any links to your supplier?

Re: New in wall system

Hi

No, it's not cold funnily enough! The 'cold cathode' refers to the fact that there are no heaters at the end of the tubes like you would have in a fluorescent tube.

They run warm to the touch but not uncomfortably so - you could hold a tube even after it had been on for hours at full brightness.

Supplier is CCS Neon in Leeds.

Don`t be daft mate I`m sure your doing it as fast as the money allows, luckily my pot was full from the sale of our last house which is just as well as it would take me years.

Carry on Steve you`re doing a great job

Allan

Re: New in wall system

No, it's my tardiness that has caused the problems. The money has only run out because I have taken so long to spend it!

Little bit here, little bit there and the pot gets ever smaller week by week even though no significant progress has been made.

The kitchen was a killer though - it took a huge amount of effort and went massively over budget.

Myself and my wife have done everything ourselves apart from the plastering so there is some satisfaction in that. It's really quite difficult when you only have evenings and weekends to work on it.
