Recessed TV Help

i am putting my LCD TV on a stud wall, the builder is pushing me to get this wall built.

i am thinking of recessing the TV into the wall, only problem is i havent bought or not sure which TV i am going to buy, it will be a 42" LCD HDTV though

i aws wondering is there a standard depth or width for TV's, not worried about a gap between the TV and edge of recess but dont want the TV to be too far sunk in the wall, or sticking out too far.

also what type of bracket is best to use.

is there any way round this or should i just not bother recessing the TV.

Unfortunately, there is no standard width or depth for a particular size of TV although, you could always take a tape measure along to a shop that has one!!

As for how far the TV sticks out from the wall one factor is the bracket - the thicker that is the further the TV is going to stick out. I'm actually in the process of recessing my TV and I only started building the wall once I knew exactly how deep the TV + the bracket were going to be.

yeah, i understand it would be alot wiser to have bought the TV first.

i am building a new room and need to see what the budget is at end before i buy the TV and builder is putting me under pressure to put up stud wall

looks like the wise thing would be to not put it in a recess, wouldnt be able to get to a shop before builder puts up wall.

Why not short list a few tv's and then check on the net for their respective sizes, it swhat I have done for my install planning. Have a look at my thread, the design is quite comprehensive.

You could always post a thread in the LCD forum to see if someone else has wall mounted the screen you are thinking of...

what i aws thinking of doing was leaving a recess width of around 1400mm and maybe 900mm high. then just dont but a TV any bigger than that lol

if it is alot smaller then there will be a gap around thr TV which shouldnt be too bad, if it is i could fill in the gaps easy enough.

i think its maybe more the depth, again i could maybe have a depth of 400mm (say) then put the TV on a cantilever (?) bracket and if the TV sits to far in, pull it out level with wall.

feel free to find holes in this idea.

You could certainly use a cantilever bracket.

To give you an idea, the TV I'm mounting is a 37" LCD and the total depth from the wall to the front of the TV is 165mm so thats how deep I've made my recess so the front of the screen is flush with the wall.

I don't think a 42" screen is going to be much deeper so I'd say that 400mm is going to be far too deep for the recess. Personally, I'd go for no more than 200mm.

Well my total depth is 170mm, with my chosen plasma being 95mm deep, which leaves me 75mm to play with for the bracket. Not too fusse dif the tv sits a little in or out. Have a look at my drawing for exact sizes.
