I would strongly recommend getting a builder in, remember the chimney continues right upto the roof, you get it wrong and the whole lot could come down.
Sorry guys I forgot to say that we removed the bedromm chim breast awhail ago so its only the downstairs to go. I thought the joists would be sitting on it but it seems they're trimmed around it.
I asked building control and they advised I would need BRegs approval if I wanted to cut into the existing but would not need to get involved if I tore it all down and put a new stud one up.
I'm moving to tearing ot all down to be honest. At least I can start clean once the breast is removed.
I would still get a structural engineer to come and have a look. When you ripped the one in the bedroom out did you go all the way upto the roof and remove the chimney ?? They're built roof to ground level for a reason ( They're heavy).

It was all done legit with BRegs approval. Gallows bracket in loft.
