Thanks: Gave 7, Got 13 | Lufer's "Boys' Room" Build
We finished an extension to the house a little while ago which left us with a spare room. Having left it idle for a period of time it was apparent that Mrs L did not have her eyes on the space for anything else. I then moved my sons Wii into the room utilising the old CRT and after another short period of time felt in a strong enough position to claim the room as a “boys’ room” and the plan was hatched!
Unfortunately I don’t have pictures of the starting point. We ripped out the old fireplace and gas fire, carpets, radiators (there were 3!) lighting etc. We installed new downlights (2 way switching 4 on 4 off or all on) and a new radiator. I then set about extending the ‘fire place’ to create a hosting station for the plasma and AV equipment.
Equipment to be installed:
Panasonic 42PH9D
Onkyo 674 AVR
Denon 1930 DVD player
Cyrus Linkport
Wii
Sky HD
Speakers:
Front B& W 602.5 s3
Centre: B & W LCR60 S3
Rears: DS6 S3
Sub: PB10-NSD
Zone 2 (Dining room)
Kef satellites KHT-2005.2
The idea is that utilising the zone 2 I can access my music server (in main room) both from the “Boys’ room” and the dining room.
The pictures show the results so far.
Cables allowed for at present:
Sky HD feeds taken to dish
RF feed
Speakers cables – front, rear, satellites and sub
Cat5 cable to Cyrus Linkserver (music server)
Telephone extension
The openings you see will be clad in Oak veneered mdf (26mm) with oak edging strips, which is hopefully arriving tomorrow.
I've also put a couple of snaps of the main room set up litsted in my sig.

Thanks. I hope to get some more decorating done this weekend.
I wondered if anyone had any experience of the B & W DS6? I've heard them in a 'proper' environment and they sounded good. Ideally they would have been lower down but then they look a bit daft (IMO, but more importantly in Mrs L's opinion too!)) half way up the wall. I opted for white and thought they would fit above the picture rail. Somehow I got the measurement wrong and now have had to cut the coving out the way to accommodate!
Another question from those that have been there and done it. At the moment I have the power coming into the base of the firplace (no sockets fitted as yet). My intention is to keep them away from the other cables as much as possible. As they will all be behind the backboard of the unit how best to switch them all off when I am away? I thought of a fused spur / master switch on the outside of the chimney but a) a fused spur will only be 13a? b) the intention is to clad the chimney in material rather than paint / paper and this makes fitting switches / sockets very tricky.
I could cut a switch in one of the backboards, maybe high up out of eyes view? Anyone got any suggestions?

Sikenny, The coffee table came from Heals, it took us ages to find one we liked.
The weekend has been another busy one. A couple of coats of paint on the ceiling has tidied that up a treat.
Then set about making up the oak 'boxes' to form the plasma surround and the av kit shelving.
the pieces are not yet fixed in place just positioned to see how it looks.
Then the base unit:
All the leading edges will have a strip of oak fixed to them.
Both slotted in:
Need to make a couple of 'doors' for the access hatches and we are nearly there!
This week should be decorating I think and getting ready for the material that will be fixed to the chimney.

Looking smart so far, are they large floor to ceiling windows behind the install or french/patio doors?

The intention is to decorate the chimney breast in a dark material and probably making blinds for those windows out of the same stuff.

Hi,
looks good,
where did you get the oak panels form? I need to get hold of some to make an AV unit.
Cheers.

Thanks Ross, the oak is veneered mdf from a place called Arnold Laver Timberworld in reading. www.timberworld.co.uk
I think they have numerous branches around the country.
The sides and shelves are 26mm and the backs are 13mm. I had them engineer some solid oak strips to finish off the leading edges.
Not had much time to do things this week other than some painting and we are on holiday next week for half term. All I want to do is crack on and get it finished...obvioulsy won't be doing anything tonight but watching the mighty reds win big ears for the 6th time

Unfortunately I broke my camera whilst on hols at the end of May. I've missed photographing much of the work on the 'Boys Room' as a result!
We finished the majority of the decorations a couple of weeks ago. We had decided to finish the chimney in a material that would compliment the other furnishings. We fixed the material on with spray contact adhesive.
Finally on Saturday we managed to get the shelving completed and this was then finished with some natural oil to bring out the grain in the oak.
Sunday was spent tidying the room out as the carpet fitter was arriving first thing on Monday. Luckily I had a friend around and the pair of us managed to mount the screen.

Then on Monday evening I managed to start installing the kit and speakers. Sky will be installing an HD box next week and I need to finish off the cat 5 connections to enable the linkport to function with the music library.
[IMG] [/IMG]
Wiring the rears was a bit tricky but they sound great!
The furniture was also delivered last night and is extremely comfy
Just curtains and blinds to go really.

Tonight I shall start tweaking everything and making sure it all works perfectly. I'm not the best at reading manuals but I'll give it my best!
