Sound proofing?

I have plans to convert one of my bedrooms into a games / movie room. The problem is that I live in a semi-detached house and this room joins onto my neighbours house.

What's the best way for sound proofing this wall?

Depends on how DIY capable you are and how much money you want to spnd i suppose

i went for a cheap alternative and purchased some wickes sound/insulation slabs (if i recall you get 6 in a pack) glued them to some ply board and bought a roll of material to cover them with i then screwed them to the wall

it looks quite good and worked out at around £100.

Neighbour says she cant hear a thing even though i play my cinema quite loud (1950's build)

I must admit that i'm not very DIY capable, but I know a man who is!

Any reason why you covered them in material? Could they just be painted with emulsion, or would they need a coat of plaster beforehand?

i think soundproofing and acoustics are getting confused here, interior acoustic panels can be made as described above, but sound proofing is a whole different ball game, search these forums for soundproofing for toms of advice.

Interesting. I just read an article in one of the high-end magazines over here and they suggest ply boards to reduce the reverb and sound absorbers for the sound. Great coincidence to your reply

Are you German-savvy? Guess not
Well, the magazine is called Audio (www.audio.de). They compared different materials like concrete, glass, furniture and ply board etc. and their impact on the low, mid and high range regarding reverb.
Depending on how you build the wall with ply boards (thickness, insulation, etc) you will get reductions on low tones from little to much, a lot in the middle and a little to much in the highs.
The article also talks about sound absorbers including special foils for the windows called Microsorber foils, which was new to me.

BTW: I build my room with OSB boards. I have no isses with reverb and not even with the bass modes (the latter to my surprise)
