the only power i have in my loft is a light - can i put a socket on this circuit ?

Is that a no because of safety or a no because regulations. My loft was lined and boarded previously but there is only the light bulb. I just want to plug a pc in up there hence the question. There is no permanent access and I will remove if I ever sell.

safety - Dont even think about it - unless you want your house to burn down!

Suggest you look at putting a spur from a mains socket up into your loft.

I personally would think twice about putting a PC in a loft as the summer heat (esp this summer!) is very very hot.

An under the stairs cuboard or hall is a best bet - maybe even a garage or garden shed if you have the room (with wireless N!)

An electrian has told me that no you shouldn’t do it - but if you do do it you should use a fused socket at 5amps max. The danger is drawing to much ampage. The fuse in the consumer unit should blow when you exceed the ampage of the lighting circuit but if it doessnt the cables melt. Thus the fused socket protects against this. Pc would be ok but not a kettle.
