Mounting sockets in skirting

Have any of you ever mounted your sockets into the skirting boards?

I was contemplating doing this in my new house but not sure what it would look like, tried looking for some pics but couldn't find any. I like the idea of keeping the walls uncluttered.

Any links or pics would be great

Re: Mounting sockets in skirting

in older houses you find that most sockets are in the skirting boards. i may be wrong but new laws now require them top be of a certain height from the floor (12 or 18 inches?) im not a sparky but read it somewhere

http://www.iee.org/Publish/WireRegs/...luminaires.pdf

According to the regs, minmum recommended mount height of 450mm

All I know is that none of mine are mounted that high!

Only thing I would say is that it might make hoovering etc a bit tricky.

Re: Mounting sockets in skirting

Cheers guys.

Well it looks like they'll all be mounted at 450mm from the floor then, I've got to conform to building regs as it's a complete re-wire and need building control approval.

Didn't think about the hoovering, good point.

Re: Mounting sockets in skirting

The regulation which states 450mm minimum applies to NEW BUILDS/CONVERSIONS ONLY.

In an existing property, you can put them at whatever height you like!

Re: Mounting sockets in skirting

If you are installing them at ground level, it's normally a good idea to mount them upside down so that the cable comes straight up rather than jammed down into the floor.

Re: Mounting sockets in skirting

not sure if the same regs cover AV cables that covers mains interms of mounting and i have known people get the wiring signed off then move all the sockets back down i currently live in a new flat with low switches and high sockets and it can be a pain but its no real issue (its so people in a wheel chair can reach, 2nd floor flat no lifts! Figure that out they could get into the flat but could plug in a hair dryer!)
