Plasma screen stand

Hi All,
After searching for weeks I couldn't find a stand for my new PHD8 plasma that both SWMBO and I liked, so I set to building one...

I use CAD at work so was able to draw it up and make a 3D model.

I used white oak for the base and back board, with some painted aluminium uprights for the main structure, and some steel plate and angle thrown in to make all the joints (that you can't see). I found a really good local glass supplier who was able to shape a safety glass shelf for me. When I bought the screen (from AVSales who are great by the way) I bought a Unicol flat wall mount with it. The stand was designed to use the Unicol mount, but could probably be modified to use another.

If I'd thought about it a bit more I would have taken some photos during the build to show how it went together, but I was so keen to make it that I didn't think until now.

These are the only pics I've got at the mo, but If anyone is interested I can take some more.

That looks superb, you've done a great job! How much would you say it cost for all the materials, and roughly how long did it take you to put it together?

Thanks for that.

To be honest it was quite costly:
£80 for the oak
£75 for the aluminium uprights
£45 for the glass shelf
£20 for shelf brackets and other bits (screws & things)
£120 for the Unicol wall mount
£0 for bits of steel plate and angle (off cuts from work)

So thats about £335 for materials. I only had to buy 1 tool to make it, which was a router bit to put an edge profile on the base - at £30 not cheap, but I will use it elsewhere, so not too bad.

I guess it took maybe 5 whole days from start to finish, but I didn't get a full run so it was spread out over 4-5 weeks (waiting for glue to dry etc.)

I could probably have bought one for the money, but it was a lot of fun to make. Cheers,

Thanks guys, I'm really pleased with the way it turned out.

I thought it was a daft idea at first, but when I couldn't find a stand that was right, the idea took off on its own.
I was a bit worried about it being strong enough, but when I put the screen on it didn't move one bit, and became more stable (I guess from the extra weight), but I fixed it to the wall behind just to make sure!. The screen is at 800mm height, but it's got a bit of adjustment built in (-50mm to +150mm in 50mm steps) so I can change it around if needed.

Excellent! would really recommend it. The only thing I would say is make sure you plan & draw it all out carefully first! Being able to choose the wood and finish that you want is a real bonus though.
