Lighting

We are building a new house and are planning to have a home cinema in our lounge. The lounge is 6 metres long by 5.25 metres wide and has a pitched ceiling. I have two queries about lighting.

We propose to install LED rope lighting around the perimeter of the room where the pitched ceiling joins the wall. Can anyone suggest a way of constructing a trough/coving to house the light rope?

We also need to light the area in the middle of the room where the seating will be. This would be for normal activity like reading. Any suggestions on how to do this would be appreciated. The construction of the pitched ceiling is cement & concrete.

I attach of photograph of the room under construction.

Thanks

Hi!

It struck me, looking at your photo, that its going to be hard to concentrate on the films with all the bars in the way.

Anyway, on your question, discovery home and leisure had a programme running ("boys rooms" or some such title) where the guy builds a cinema room with this type of coving around the edges of the ceiling to house the lighting. Gave a very good explanation too but I cant remember the details. It might be on if you keep an eye out, or maybe someone has it recorded?

you could build a plasterboard or mdf trough structure to run around the perimter of the room - this would house the rope lighting.

or perhaps... you could line the wall with plasterboard, then add another layer of plasterboard on the top - but leaving a small gap at the top to conceal the rope lighting? (the 'open' bit of the plasterboard at the top would only need about an inch gap)

as for the central lighting... how about a false ceiling, suspended by steel wires, the 'false ceiling' was effectivly just a huge timber/plasterboard structure, imagine drawing your room on a peice of paper and drawing a smaller square inside it - and this central square contains a set of downlighters (or your choice of fittings)

what do you think? (if it makes sense)
