I built the equipment rack myself from solid Oak. First time I have done anything like that so I am rather pleased with it.

It is supposed to have doors on the front but I think I ordered the wrong hinges, as the doors will not open when you put them on !!

Very nice setup, as zero has said, very clean and looks very professional

With you're home made rack, do you have any problems with over heating amps? I see you have the DVD recorder on top of the amp (both Sony?). It doesn't seems to give it much room to breathe. Just out of curiosity, what's the big silver box in the middle shelf?

What are the rear speakers? Looks like you've cut some bipoles in half

I have had no over heating problems yet, but it's only been in a day. There is a little room around the amp for it to breath, and there is no back to the rack, it opens into the void between the real wall and the new false wall. Not a very good explination i know, all will become clear when I post some more pics.

Amp is a Pioneer, and thats a Humax PVR freeview box on top of it. The big silver box is my HTPC.

The rear speakers are Mordant Short bipoles, ceiling mounted. One cone points out into the room, the other points at the wall behind, and in theory bounces it's sound of the wall. It sound very effective.

I have more pics of the speakers to post.

Hi mate,

Great install, I'm after a Oak rack similar to yours. Could you give me some info on how you made it and how much (roughly) it cost!!

Cheers

Ok, here are some more pics taken throughout the install. Hopefully these will make it a little clearer how everything is put together.

Hope they are of use to everyone...

Here you can see the false wall being built. It is constructed from 6mm MDF, and some timber battons. It has a metal frame behind made from 1" RHS, which the tv bracket will be mounted to.

Here is a pic at night, showing the 3 uplights mounted in the top, and the LED strip lights which will be behind the LCD.

Here is a pic showing the Yamaha sub positioned in the corner, with all cables routed into the back of the skirting board.

Here is a pic showing the ceiling mounted rear speakers.

Here is the wall, with the TV bracket in place. The bracket was made by my father in law (he has his own fabrication business)

Here is a shot, showing the AV cabinet under construction. The cabinet is made from Oak, 20mm for the bottom and side, 40mm for the top. The cabinet is joined using rebate joints, routed into the wood. The legs for the cabinet were made by my father in law. They are stainless steel tube, with a thread welded in the top, so they can be bolted to the bottom piece of oak.

Finally here is a pic of the wiring up in progress. I have organised it so all power cables run along the floor, and all signal cables are fixed to a batton running along the top of the cutout, to keep them seperated.

Hopefully thats given you all some ideas.

Any comments or questions welcome.

DaftMole - My last post should give you some idea of how the cabinet is put together. To give you an Idea, the oak was about £300, but this included the doors which I have not yet figured out how to mount.

It's not as hard as it may look, I have never done anything like this before, I just brought a wood working book, borrowed a router, and got stuck in.
