Whatever way you vent a fire out, heat rises, if only that which comes out from the front of the fire. There are balanced flue and power flue models available (sorry convection flue is the wrong wording Oakmere), but they are only of any use if you don't already have a chimney, which I would suspect everyone would want it on anyway. They still give out heat.
I work for a gas fire manufacturer and we don't recommend it either, but hey, it isn't our investment you are sticking on the wall and overheating. Best case must be that you can reduce it's life, as plasmas get hot at the best of times.
