Building Speakers

Hi all,
I am new to this so If I come across as dumb it's because I am.

I have a Teac AG-7D 6.1 AV amp and I want to build two front floorstanding speakers to use with it for a home cinema. I have at my disposal

6 x 8" Wharfedale 100 Watts 6-8 ohms

2 x 5" Wharfedale 100 Watts 4-8 ohms

2 x 1" Wharfedale Tweeters 100 Watts

Can anyone recomend what combination of the above to use in each speaker and what's the best way to wire them?
Also if anyone can offer advice on calculating the internal volume and porting for the boxs (that I will make) it would be appreciated.

To calculate the box volume and porting you need some parameters for the bass units called the Thiele-Small parameters. You need at least:

Vas - the "compliance equivalent volume"
Qts - the Q of the total system (electrical and mechanical)
Fs - the free air resonance frequency of the driver

If you don't have those, or you don't have the equipment to measure them (signal generator, couple of multimeters, time and carpentry skills), give up now. You'll be guessing and will end up wasting time, money and the drivers for a sub-standard system.

These parameters often come with new driver units; if yours are not, you'll probably struggle to get them unless you can find someone helpful at Wharfedale. Of course, it's not in their interest to help you - they could sell you some pre-built speakers...

Try Wilmslow audio as they are probably the most knowlegable on DIY speaker kits as they sell them so they may be able to advise on a suitable crossovers etc.

If you can't find the Thiele-Small parameters, a way around it can be to find out which speakers Wharfedale put those drivers into, find out/calculate the volume of those boxes and use that. This assumes Wharfedale know how to calculate box sizes
