Question new purchase

help.
I have just purchased a phillips 7500r set up,I have realized 3
things.
1 i'm a bit dim !
2 I am having trouble setting it up !
3 although it states multi region dvd it will not allow me to play a region 1 dvd
is there a way to enable this ?

re 2 above

present set up : standard tv [ soon to be upgraded to lcd )

telewest cable into house
video player
question is using scart leads how do i set up system
p.s tele has 1 scart socket as does video player

in anticipation
