Can i fix it..?

Ive had a Philips DVDR1000 recorder about 2 years now and its decided to play up. Switched it on the other week and it just showed an error code.Ive had no luck finding out what the code means apart from updating the firmware (which it is updated)
If i run the self test by holding play when i plug the machine in it sometimes (twice infact) runs through and says all is ok. I can then switch the machine off and on and its then fine as long as i dont turn the thing off. Unfortunately someone in my house hold switched it off yesterday and now its doing it again but the self test wont work now either. I know the machine is physicaly ok its just having trouble initializing itself. Ayone with advice or websites that may help would be apreciated.
Id rather try and fix it myself if at all posible before i take it to a repair shop.
