Discrete Sound Proofing Options

I want to deaden the noise fromt the front room somewhat, but do not want to go over the top with stud walls & insulation.

Double glazing is being installed next week offering up the opportunity for change. I was thinking along the lines of fabric (is there such a thing) wallpaper, speaker stands, thick curtains and so on. Are speakers fixed to walls (brackets) a good or bad idea?

I would welcome your suggestions...

When you say deaden the sound, are you talking about minimising sound reflections etc or improving the sound proofing qualities of the room to minimise sound leakage.

Apologies for the tardy reply, this post disappeared from the forum when I posted it. It could be found by searching, but not on the main list. I was so peeved I though it had died.

I have successfully upset the neighbour, and the wife works nights, so I'm trying to keep it in the front room...

Its sounds like decent headphones are in order - its nigh on impossible to 'keep sound in a room' in a modern house and if you have to turn the volume down low enough not to annoy the rest of the house you cant 'hear' your system.

Attaching the speakers to your walls is likely to enhance the 'out of room' experience rather than diminish it
