Where to run cabling

I'm going to be laying a wooden floor in the next couple of months and I can't decide if it would be a good idea to run my speaker cable underneath or not. It would save me money as the cable runs won't need to be as long but then if anything went wrong I wouldn't be able to get to it. The other option is to run it round the skirting but there will be 5 lengths of it, plus my sub lead, I really don't know if it will fit, so getting as much underneath the floor would be a better option, as long as nothing goes wrong!

Has anyone else had any experince with this or has any advice?

I'm planning on doing the same thing. I think I'm going to get my builders to screw down ratter than nail down a number of the boards so that I can get easy access to the cables

now that's a good idea, obvious really, I thought of that with the skirting but didn't give it a thought for the flooring, silly me! I'll instruct my boyfriend to do just that, thanks!

Tracey if you can lay ducting or waste pipe in the floor with cables and 3-4 lengths of string (to use as pull throughs) then you can change cables etc even add more very easily.

I have 7 sets of cabling channelled into the wall behind the skirting in my cinema ... it takes up next to no room if you use something like QED Silver Anniversary

Or you could put in some box skirting, then you have plenty of room for running cabels round the room.

Any suggestions on where one can find "nice" box skirting? All the stuff I've seen is white, plasticky or both.

Try a professional carpenter or DIY depots. Not seen any decent wood or wood look myself.

My dad found some nice shaped ply stuff. I'll ask him where bit came from.

When i laid my laminate ,I used this with the green fibre board underlay butting up over the lip .Then I just ran the speaker cable up the wall , worked pretty well. The trick is to try and position it so that its not under the join (unless running it perpendicular to the planks) otherwise you end up with an authentic squeaky floorboard .I think I have seen metal ones similar to this in B&Q , which would probably be a better option.
However , since I changed from the bell wire that came as standard ,I have resorted to running the cable round in plastic trunking and using hot melt glue to stick it to the wall

Thanks for all the suggestions, looks like it's a common problem. I'm fitting box skirting to hide most of the cabling where my hi-fi and tv will be in the alcove, it's going to be a diy design, will probably use MDF on top and paint it the same colour as the wall then stick the normal pine skirting on the front. I don't really want that anywhere else though as it will show too much. I had thought of using some sort of trunking underneath the floor so that if I need to change the cables I can, I'm sure I can work out some way to channel it in.

You could run trunking behind normal skirting and use a different way to fix it to the wall (not nails but a removeable system).

Check your nearest B&O dealer as they have box skirting to hide all the cables, very clever design it is too!

Did I miss it? I saw the Dado and System 38 stuff.

I was looking for something like wooden skirting, with channel routed out the back to carry the cables. I'll probably end up doing it myself, but wondered if I could save the hassle.
